Nice to see construction start today.

Unfortunately it will not allow for widebody aircraft and long haul flights.

It only took two decades to start construction! Is it already obsolete?

Broward moves toward eminent domain for airport Hilton

The county has little choice but to acquire the properties because work has already begun on expanding the runway, and the hotel and marine properties are in trapezoid-shaped safety zones that need to be vacated. Moreover, the height of the Hilton was considered to be an obstruction, an FAA report said.

In July, activity will ramp up to two ten hour shifts a day and will haul more than 900 truckloads to the construction site near US Highway 1 and Griffin Road. An estimated 12,000 cubic yards of fill will be hauled to the airport six days a week. Later this summer, a dedicated rail spur from the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway will be completed to augment the fill operator. This initiative will reduce the number of trucks on the roadways significantly reducing vehicle exhaust emissions and traffic congestion. The FEC Rail Spur will handle two trains each day with 80 cars per train. Each train will haul 8,000 cubic yards of fill each day. Get set for big delays at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport

February 2, 2013|By Brittany Wallman, Sun Sentinel

In three months, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International will become America’s busiest passenger plane airport operating with just one runway.

Starting May 6, when one of the two runways at FLL airport is taken out of service, travelers will spend extra time sitting on the tarmac waiting for takeoff, airport officials predict.

They might arrive a bit late to their destinations.

And if something happens to tie up the sole runway — a plane’s tire goes flat, for example — air travel will shut down until the runway is cleared.

“That’s going to to cause chaos there,” said former commercial pilot Alan Cohn, now a Learjet pilot and pilot-for-hire who occasionally flies at FLL. “If someone comes in and messes up the runway, that airport is closed.”
