Cool design, but probably won’t get built.

This guy Cymbal is a serial flipper (just look at his history in South Florida), and admits he does not have financing to build.

Since there isn’t a market for a project like this in FTL, he probably won’t even be able to flip it.

I want something like this! I’m tired of all these generic blue and white cruise-ship inspired buildings

Controversy grows over ‘Champion’ tree at Marina Lofts site

….if the project goes forth as planned, the nearly century-old tree, like shades of an old Joni Mitchell song, will be replaced by a parking lot.

Soaring six stories high, the tree’s latticework of limbs explodes in radiant green. Its dome-shaped canopy casts shade over an area 127 feet wide. At least four squirrel families call it home, while ibis and ducks poke about in the grass beneath.

Neighbors, preservationists and local officials are rallying to keep the tree in the 400 block of Southwest Fourth Avenue from being sacrificed to the Marina Lofts project, a development of two 36-story towers and a 25-story building with more than 1,000 rental units.

…….

In 1987, the Fort Lauderdale City Commission designated the evergreen a “protected tree” which means it can only be moved upon the commission’s specific approval.

…..

Broward Vice Mayor Kristen Jacobs has requested the county declare the tree historical. “Designating the tree historical would require the current land developer to keep the tree in its existing location and to incorporate the tree into future development plans,” she wrote.

The County Commission will discuss Jacobs’ request at its Nov. 13 meeting.

Marina Lofts – The City Commission has received considerable input both in favor of and opposed to the Marina Lofts project, proposed for the parcel at 424 SW 4th Avenue in Tarpon River. Broward County is considering taking action to have the “rain tree” on the property designated as a historic resource. This item will be on the County Commission Agenda on Tuesday, December 11th at 2:00 PM, 115 South Andrews Avenue, Room 422.

Moving an Octogenarian Is Tough, Especially One That Put Down Roots
A Plan to Relocate Florida’s Largest Rain Tree For Towers Has Fans Shaking Like a Leaf

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.—Developer Asi Cymbal thinks his proposed residential project here is just what this city needs to liven up a derelict stretch of its riverfront downtown.

The futuristic, three-tower complex would include about 1,000 rental units, three restaurants and a marina.

There’s just one problem: The tree standing right where one of the towers is supposed to sprout up. And not just any tree. It is a roughly 80-year-old, six-story-tall rain tree, the largest of its kind in Florida. Mr. Cymbal has an elaborate plan, involving consultants and a mover of giant famous trees, to relocate it about 800 feet away at the entrance of the property and build a park around it.

I hope this project happens. The area is already a hotbed for construction with the Courthouse and New River Yacht Club projects.
