Simkins Plans 633-Foot Miami Innovation Tower In Park West

Developer Michael Simkins is planning to build a media and advertising display tower called the Miami Innovation Tower in Park West.

The tower will be part of a larger Special Area Plan for the area call the Miami Innovation District, which includes the former Greyhound facility (more on this coming soon.)

The proposal calls for a 633-foot tower clad with illuminated digital mesh screens that will display advertising, video and other information. It meets Miami 21 zoning requirements, according to city officials, and is also in an area designated by planners as a possible location for a media tower.

The tower will have a twisting appearance, and will be covered with five display billboards, some of which will rotate 30 degrees. The ‘hovering base’ of the tower is being designed to be pedestrian friendly, and will include exhibition and media facilities.

The Southeast Overtown / Park West CRA stands to gain millions from the new tower. Under a plan set to be voted on next week, the CRA will get 3% of gross advertising revenues from the tower, with a minimum of $1 million dollars per year (set to increase by a minimum of 3% each year.) The developer will also pay $3 million to the agency when a construction permit is issued, and $2 million when construction is completed.

    LED billboards are illegal under Miami-Dade County law. This disaster will shine ads visible twenty miles away. No condos can sold facing this mess. New ads every 6 seconds? 24/7?

      Its a totally different monster. I believe Skyrise has the potential to catapult Miami into another sphere. We could benefits from the millions of cruise passengers who go from seaport to airport. They can see Skyrise as they come into port and say. Let’s stay a day and check it out. It will be the urban alternative to those Mickey tourists and moreover transform downtown into a tourist magnet. What tourist will come to Miami and not want to climb the observatory?

        spoken like a true devil with ties to the project. it’s ugly, no one wants it, and it should not be built with public funds. it’ll be another eye sore like bayside only good to sucker in some tourists. it will have a couple middle management jobs, a few c-level, and tons of crappy minimum wage jobs. how is this a good deal for miami?

    Beautiful design, It is great for Miami. The developer is creating a much needed Innovation District in a City rip for this type of growth. The question should be, does Miami want to be a city that thrives off of tourism and recreation, or does it want to take on the mantle of being a gateway city. An Innovation District adds jobs and growth as that is embraced in locations out of Silicon Valley like Boston, St Louis, Philadelphia and others. As to digital media, there are great examples of successful locations outside of Times Square and Tokyo such as Dundas Square in Toronto, Victory Park in Dallas and others that tranform cities and create vibrancy. Does Miami want to grow or just remain a condo development real estate commodity market for those who can afford it. It is time for jobs and real growth to be encouraged and time for Park West and Overtown to naturally transform and become part of the conversation for responsible and sustainable growth.

    Joke? What would you rather see there, another generic condo tower with glass balconies? As long as the billboard is high quality (unlike the tacky dancing figures at the Intercontinental) this should be a striking departure from the norm. Keep in mind the billboards would probably be aimed mostly at the drivers approaching the causeway and not the neighboring buildings.

      Everyone says it doesn’t matter, looks great! But when you ask if they would be willing to have it in there community or adjacent property butting up to their house or building, oooooh boy, the answer changes real quick.

    So who do you think will complain first, the run down Greyhound bus station, the affordable housing, the empty vacant lots or the strip club? Were talking about an area that is run down and under the best circumstances will be that way for another decade.

    Would you want this next a condo, probably not. But good thing is there aren’t any condos nearby. There are currently 2 lower rent buildings that I think as a whole would benefit from the area being better.
