Miami Beach Will Have Citywide Gigabit Internet By August 2017

Atlantic Broadband increased download speeds in the Miami area to 250Mbps, with 1Gbps coming in August 2017.

Unlike other gigabit providers however, the company only provides upload speeds that are a fraction of the download bandwidth:

MIAMI BEACH, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–

Atlantic Broadband, the nation’s 9th largest cable operator, today announced significant internet speed increases as part of its $6.3 million “FastForward Miami” initiative. Announced in July 2016, “FastForward Miami” is bringing network infrastructure and service enhancements to residents and businesses in Miami Beach and surrounding areas including Aventura, Bal Harbour, Bay Harbor Islands, Golden Beach, North Bay Village, Pinecrest, South Miami, Sunny Isles Beach, Surfside, plus Brickell, the Biscayne corridor and downtown Miami.

With this next phase of the “FastForward Miami” initiative rolling out today, residential and business customers now have access to increased internet speeds of up to 250 Mbps. In addition, all existing internet subscribers will see an increase in speeds as part of their service over the next few months. Once complete, “FastForward Miami” will deliver even faster internet speeds, including the delivery of Gigabit speeds planned in August 2017.

In total, Atlantic Broadband’s “FastForward Miami” will deliver:

At UM and a few other places, this service really does clock in at virtually instant speeds for all uses, included large uploads of photos and video. Some tests such as the direct Google test show lower speeds than ookla for downloads and uploads, but still in the hundreds of Mbps for down and uploads. But 20 Mbps upload would not match that by far.

I have atlantic broadband at my home. I can tell you that we regularly lose internet service for days. When I call I’m put on hold for hours. My experience is very poor for both the service delivered and the customer service experience.

It’s a smaller potatoes, “local” company, for the region, like how “frontier” serves the rural “frontiers” in mainly West Virginia, as well as rural parts of many other states.
