104-Year-Old Building Demolished Across From MiamiCentral

Demolition is underway on a two-story building across from MiamiCentral.

County records show that the 13,090-square-foot structure was built in 1914, making it one of Miami’s oldest.

Greenwood Miami LLC purchased the property in 2015 for $6.3 million. An affiliated company also owns the adjacent surface parking lot, for a total assemblage of 45,000 square feet.

No plans appear to have been filed yet for a new development on the site. Next door, a 31-story, 300-unit tower by Grand Station Partners is planned on Miami Parking Authority property.

Exactly! Most of these people who are whining over this building being demolished don’t understand the unbelievable cost of saving a structure such as this. People can complain but if they owned this building and were told how much it would cost to restore it up to today’s codes, they would say “forget that, someone’s willing to buy it and tear it down and I can make millions just on the land it sits on alone.”

What made it historic… because it was 104 years old? I bet if you owned this site and someone offered you five million dollars for it and you purchased it for $75k years ago, you’re going to sell it and take that money instead of trying to get a loan to restore it.

I agree with you, after seeing what the former commissioner Sarnoff and the Morningside mafia led by El Capo Elvis Cruz did to the MiMo district in the Upper East Side, where any single crappy Motel was declared historic, and to make things worse they imposed a ridiculous 35 FT height restriction (like we live in F..ing Paris). Now the area is dead, the population density in the area is to low to sustain the few small businesses that have survived the lack of pedestrian traffic.

Not sure that it had any historic or architectural value. Old doesn’t make it worth keeping. I would never say that about The Freedom Tower/Miami News building or the Shoreline Arcade, Miami-Dade Courthouse, the old post office, the Ingraham Building or the Dade Commonwealth building. But this thing…IDK.

Look at Flagler. It doesn’t work. People always go to the bright new shiny object -Brickell City Center and even now Design District is staring to flourish. And next year it will be Miami World Center.

Soon Downtown Miami will be a generic, contemporary white stucco neighborhood like Brickell and Midtown.
Detroit has been doing a great job incorporating existing structures into new developments.

It was built at a time where return on investment wasn’t the only consideration.
There are few buildings of this age in Miami. Other cities have been able to keep some of the old while embracing the new. I hope we can too.

Actually, yes. The most vibrant urban areas have a lively mix of buildings in both style and height. This was one of the last very few intact original buildings from the settlement of Miami. If you find that completely uninteresting as compared to the future white (or the “sexy modern” gray that was so in in 2011 NYC) stucco parking podiumed blob that will replace it, there’s no point in debate. We simply see the world differently. Enjoy the mall.
