474-Foot Miami-Dade County Courthouse Closer To Topping Off

Miami-Dade’s new civil courthouse is close to topping off, photos taken on March 8 by Phillip Pessar show.

The courthouse tower is planned to rise 25 stories, or 474 feet above ground.

A private developer is building the courthouse in exchange for payment from the county.

HOK is the architect.

Awaiting an announcement of an investor buying the old court house and renovating it into a hotel and office complex…city hall should relocate there but doesnt seem likely unless they unload their current waterfront home, which I’m sure would command a large premium and provide the city with loads of profits to be reallocated for things like affordable housing.

I honestly think one of the reasons Miami City hall is where it is is because it’s inaccessible to the majority of Miamians. Having it right downtown would encourage civic engagement and they can’t have that…think about how many people would actually show up to meetings if it was right downtown.

That’s a great point! Makes sense not to mention the politicians get direct water views on top of all the other benefits they give themselves…

It would have easy access to the Metro Rail. Like in most major cities, their City Hall is Downtown. Apparently not in Miami.

Nobody would show up. People don’t care about municipal stuff, unfortunately.

Feather could work

With a price tag like that, it better have gold plated walls and diamond chandeliers. I still can’t grasp how such an ugly and small building can cost more than the entirety of the Metrorail in 1984.

It’s still just a concrete shell and yet you can already tell it’s going to be the ugliest new building in all of downtown. Brutalist concrete bunker with a few extra windows

government center doesn’t look so bad

Assuming that is sarcasm, the current government center is way more visually appealing than the new courthouse with irregular windows and cheap stucco, especially considering that it is way smaller and more expensive.

A symbol of dystopia

I actually don’t think it’s that bad. Not sure why everyone hates it so much. Looks like it will be clad in stone too, as opposed to typical cheap stucco.

It could be gilded in gold, but still doesn’t excuse it being a box with irregular jailhouse windows.

This wall of a building should get the ugliest building award for 2023!

This is the civil courthouse. The criminal courthouse will remain next to Jackson Memorial / 836. This new courthouse is desperately needed. Civil cases in Miami now are a bad joke. Everything but trials is by Zoom. Not because of Covid but because the old courthouse is unsafe and can’t accommodate the hoards of lawyers it once did. Justice can’t work remotely.
