Amazon Abandons Plans For HQ2 In New York, But Not Looking Elsewhere

Amazon is pulling out of plans to build a headquarters in New York City.

The company won’t be reopening its HQ2 search however. Instead, they will proceed as planned in Northern Virginia and Nashville, while also growing existing offices in the U.S. and Canada, according to a statement.

Last week, Miami officials said they would reach out to Amazon after a report that the company was considering abandoning plans for New York.

Amazon would have created over 25,000 jobs in New York, in exchange for $3 billion in incentives. Some local politicians and union leaders opposed the deal.

The full statement from Amazon:

Update on plans for New York City headquarters

After much thought and deliberation, we’ve decided not to move forward with our plans to build a headquarters for Amazon in Long Island City, Queens. For Amazon, the commitment to build a new headquarters requires positive, collaborative relationships with state and local elected officials who will be supportive over the long-term. While polls show that 70% of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City.

We are disappointed to have reached this conclusion—we love New York, its incomparable dynamism, people, and culture—and particularly the community of Long Island City, where we have gotten to know so many optimistic, forward-leaning community leaders, small business owners, and residents. There are currently over 5,000 Amazon employees in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Staten Island, and we plan to continue growing these teams.

We are deeply grateful to Governor Cuomo, Mayor de Blasio, and their staffs, who so enthusiastically and graciously invited us to build in New York City and supported us during the process. Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio have worked tirelessly on behalf of New Yorkers to encourage local investment and job creation, and we can’t speak positively enough about all their efforts. The steadfast commitment and dedication that these leaders have demonstrated to the communities they represent inspired us from the very beginning and is one of the big reasons our decision was so difficult.

We do not intend to reopen the HQ2 search at this time. We will proceed as planned in Northern Virginia and Nashville, and we will continue to hire and grow across our 17 corporate offices and tech hubs in the U.S. and Canada.

Thank you again to Governor Cuomo, Mayor de Blasio, and the many other community leaders and residents who welcomed our plans and supported us along the way. We hope to have future chances to collaborate as we continue to build our presence in New York over time.

Come on home Bezos!!

Anonymous

Grow the Miami offices

Anonymous

I wonder if this has anything to do with the whole Trump – Bezos war. There are a lot of things happening behind closed doors. I just hope that Amazon will reconsider Miami. We have great land available not to mention our great weather, plus we are the gateway to Latin America. Come on Jeff give us a chance 🙂

Anonymous

Has nothing to do with Trump. New York just simply stopped being business friendly.

Anonymous

Maybe it has something to do with NYC asking it’s residents for tax money and letting Amazon skate on paying one thin dime.

Anonymous

Grow offices so they stay empty?
Big corporate America goes to Atlanta, Dallas, Nashville, Houston and Seattle.

Anonymous

Too many people in Miami just don’t understand how things work.

Anonymous

AOC is dumb as a rock.

Anonymous

Yeah. Giving the richest company and richest man free money is just awful.

Fix the subway and infrastructure rather than giving money to a company that doesn’t need it!!

Anonymous

The taxes generated from the new jobs and jobs connected to the office would pay for the infrastructure. Plus NYC is not allocated their taxes to the right places in the first place.

Anonymous

They were tax breaks……….taxes they will not receive now because they are not moving there.

Anonymous

Amazon doesn’t pay taxes…grow up

suomynona

You clearly don’t understand how money or taxes work.

Anonymous

Maybe Ocrazio can pitch her Green New Deal to power the subway with soybean oil with a check from China, because no way in will taxing all the liberal elite up north fly very well.

Anonymous

Amazon would have created 10 billions $ in revenues over 10 years to New York!!!

Anonymous

Thank you. Most of these losers here in Miami making their comments are the type of ugly, pathetic dude living in mom’s basement who is shocked that a guy could say no to beautiful woman. They know very little about the woman but in their world cannot conceive of why you may ever have any reason to turn down beauty – because they are not used to having beauty around them. Hahahaha…just funny to watch these backwoods people get alarmed…”OMG, they turned down AMAZON! oh no…could I be your boyfriend now Mr. Amazon??? Please Please??” Even folks in Seattle are rolling their eyes at these bumpkins.

Danny

But there’s no basements in Miami…

Anonymous

Dang it, you got me….

They are slowly destroying this country. Sadly, lots of people falling in the trap. They don’t care about this country or the environment. It’s all a power trip.

Anonymous

You are an idiot who drinks corporate Kool Aid. Yeah NY was struggling without them. Let the shmuck cities line up, hand over welfare and bend over and take it for a fairy tale 25k jobs. It is funny how you losers just take this 25k number and talk about it like it actually happened or would have happened. You all are the reason why the average American bends over without a peep and let millions of people end up homeless. Losers.

Polo

New York City doesn’t need Amazon. New York is a mega city with GDP of $1.5 trillion and is the second richest city in the world (second to Tokyo). Amazon should go to a city that needs the jobs!

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hialeah?

Anonymous

They should come to the innovation district in downtown Miami!

^__^

This just in! After opening HQ2 in Hialeah 75% of Amazon inventory has gone missing. Meanwhile the flea market has quadrupled almost instantly!

Anonymous

Except the cities that need the jobs don’t have the competitive advantage or capital.

If so , why NY is short 2,3 billions this year ?

Anonymous

If so, why Trump has ugly hair?

Anonymous

NYC does need jobs and alot of firms are leaving. Just because they currently have that GDP and the clout from movies doesn’t mean they should stop trying to grow their economy.

Anonymous

And Miami might just might have a small chance.

Anonymous

??????

ILoveMiami

What are we going to do to get them down here?

Anonymous

Offer them coffee

Eric

Give them $3 billion dollars.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’m willing to go down on him like that guy from FYRE documentary. Just putting that out there…

Anonymous

tag team? lol

Anonymous

Jesus Christ, this site is supposed to be about Construction and architecture, now the misfits have invaded.

Anonymous

This site is about real estate so this Amazon hq2 fits in perfectly as Amazon going to a city boosts the real estate market. Renters see it as a negative and owners see it as a positive. Overall, I believe it’s a great thing for any city, especially Miami.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You must be sooooo fun at parties…

Anonymous

Are you at a party or are you at a site about construction and architecture numbskull?

Anonymous

why not both? an architecture and construction party!

Anonymous

Both

Anonymous

We Should thank Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, now we may have Amazon coming to Miami !!????

Anonymous

She’s an economic genius!

Anonymous

If they built a omni loop connection through this spot it would be a prime amazon HQ location

Anonymous

They are now going to silently revisit certain finalist bids, re-execute NDAs, and restart negotiations.

suomynona

Amazon is building in Nashville? What’s that about?

Anonymous

I know. Wtf is that all about? Absolutely baffled. I can’t see any remote anything Nashville had to offer.

Lol

Terrible location for latin american connection

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah, they announced they would operate out of there too on a much smaller scale. Even if Miami got that it would be great.

Anonymous

Get Bezzos another pretty Latina mistress and we might get the amazon company here !!??‍♀️

Anonymous

Honestly, I appreciate the sentiment behind people being angry about tax incentives. If companies truly want to move to a region, then they should care enough about the region to pay their fair share and not expect corporate welfare in the form of subsidies and tax breaks. My two cents.

Anonymous

Great news!!!

Anonymous

whelp they really blundered that one

Anonymous

Good. Billions in tax breaks my ass. Companies who want to do business in America should be willing to pay their fair share.

Anonymous

Now if they come knocking, tease them a little first with, hmm, we’ll think about it. No sloppy seconds here.

Anonymous

Is Amazon hiring any marketing specialist in Miami

Anonymous

Delusional local leaders think we had/have a chance.

Anonymous

Never say never

Azarius

Even though we NEED the client base and Jobs ..not at the cost they’re trying to make us pay

Anonymous

Go move into AOC’s house…and yes, I am a Democrat!

Anonymous

Let’s use Amazon money for our beautiful wall that our amazing President will build to address the emergency at the border. Best President ever! Bye bye bad hombres!

Anonymous

This anonymous idiot thinks that three card Molly Trump can BS anybody like he conned his dumbass into thinking that Mexico will pay for his border wall.

Anonymous

Mexico is paying for it. We just don’t know it yet. Trump is a step ahead of everyone and he is making Mexico paying for the wall and more. Trump is a genius. We can’t understand his ways but he is getting more work done than any president in the history of the world

Anonymous

One sure sign of a conman is a person telling you what he’s doing and done. One sure sign of a sucker is a person believing everything a conman says without checking anything out.

A person like shows that Trump is hitting his gullible targeted audience.

Anonymous

Trump is the cleaning the swamp in DC and now he will now clean the country of all the browns and blacks and the homosexuals so that AMERICA WILL BE GREAT AGAIN! Enough is enough. Too much dirt and sun came into this country, it’s time for come cleaning. Trump 2020

Anonymous

And after cleaning the country of “browns and blacks and the homosexuals,” my guess is he’ll then start on the kinds of white people that he hates because, you know, he and his fellow henchmen can’t and won’t stop, there’s always somebody and something else they gotta hate. Like the homosexuals, there’s a lot of white homosexuals he has to clean the country of and remember, those homosexuals do have heterosexual family members including you, who love them.

That’s a whole lotta faith you have in Trump.

Anonymous

Trump is the new Jesus and he will save us from our sins. Best President ever! No more gays, no more ethnic people, no more satanic religions just Christians!!! This will be a new America and it will be greater than ever

Anonymous

Yeah, Trump is the new Jesus who likes to grab women by the pussy.

Anon

Too much sun? can the moderator or editor of the site research these hateful IP addresses and ban them please? These idiots are ruining what was once interesting and intelligent conversation on development, architecture and construction.

Anonymous

Hey Anon, why don’t you just spend the money and create you own internet site? Nahhh, you’re just another lazy turd who would rather sit back and suggest what others ought to do with their internet site to pacify you.
