Arquitectonica Chief Accused Of Chopping Down Protected Mangroves

Arquitectonica founders Bernardo Fort-Brescia and Laurinda Spear have been accused of illegally cutting down protected mangroves on their bayfront Coconut Grove property, according to the Herald.

An attorney for the couple says that they were just clearing trees that were downed during Hurricane Irma.

Neighbors dispute that, and say unlicensed crews were cutting healthy trees in an attempt to open their view to the bay.

DERM has issued a cease and desist order and have opened an investigation after photographing evidence of the work.

The county has previously issued at least at least five warnings and violations to the couple during construction of a dock and boardwalk behind the house for illegal cutting of mangroves and mowing wetlands.
