Beckham Hasn’t Hired Arquitectonica To Design Stadium

Arquitectonica isn’t designing David Beckham’s new soccer stadium near Overtown – at least yet.

A spokesman for Beckham’s group told TNM that “no architect has been selected for a future stadium at this time.”

Beckham had worked with Arquitectonica on conceptual plans for two previous stadium proposals at PortMiami and at Museum Park. Both were eventually killed due to opposition from businesses and residents in the area.

Mr. Beckham if you or your team are reading this, Hire: Zaha Hadid.

That’s all. Thank you.

No one can afford Zaha Hadid, just look at what she proposed for Tokyo which has now been thrown out due to rediculous cost. Beautiful for sure, but not affordable. japanese Govenment has had to reel it back and Zaha was asked not to submit again. Arquitectonica is not good for this and would more than likely team up with 360. Beckham should look to a qualified firms like Populous, SHoP, HKS, Manica…and others that do great work in Stadium design.

I’m tired of people wanting architects just for their names. Hire someone with a CLUE!!! If Beckham wanted the best of the best, he would go to Dan Mies/Populous. These guys are the kings of the stadium game. Something similar to the Staples Center with mixed-use, 365 day a year activity would be perfect.

I personally have nothing against the design that Arquitectonica came up with, I like that it has a cover to provide shade on the stands. Sunny summer days in South Florida can be a bit brutal and who ever ends up designing this new stadium will hopefully take that into consideration. I think it is safe to say that it will not be Zaha, her designs will surely exceed the $250 million budget Becks is working with.

Indeed shading would be the most important feature. Which after 30 years we are finally getting shading at Sunlife Stadium. I remember as a kid those Dolphins games in Joe Robbie and baking away in that Miami September Sun at the 1pm games.

If they’ve already had them do BOTH of their previous sketches, and one of the ownership partners even made a comment about them wanting local input into the design (ie, Arquisucktonica), then they’re almost certainly going to keep them for future designs.

There will be a town hall meeting this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Overtown YMCA 351 N.W. 5th Street and it looks like the Spring Garden neighborhood across the river is set to oppose Becks plan to build the stadium. Here is the link:

I just hope they go for a ground breaking design in the American soccer world but I don’t know if the alleged $250 mil budget could do that.

I am still pissed that the county passed on the port site. Especially after looking at these photos of how dynamic that site would have been.

I think they should really work with Architechtonica. Maybe use the same concept design as Skyrise Miami. It would be gorgeous.
