Brickell’s Mandarin Oriental Closing Soon To Make Way For 850-Foot Tower

Brickell’s Mandarin Oriental hotel will close next month to make way for two new towers, according to the SFBJ.

The closing date is May 31, according to an employment notice filed with the State of Florida.

Two new towers are planned to be built on the property, following demolition of the existing hotel.

One tower will rise 66 stories, or 850 feet, while the second tower will rise 426 feet.

The new development will include The Residences at The Mandarin Oriental, as well as a new flagship Mandarin Oriental hotel.

Demolition permits are currently in process, as are construction permits for the new towers.

A gargantuan uninteresting monstrosity

Agreed. Not an iconic building for an iconic location. Too much ‘non-iconic’ development is going on these days. Overall, if too much tall, view-obstructing non-iconic architecture is developed, I fear it will be to the detriment of Miami vibe and status.

Yeah it looks like an outpost for tourists and not residents.

The current wall on that site is much less interesting than the plans for this improvement.
If you know, you know.

Funny….I was thinking something like that when the guy said “uninteresting”.

Imagine what that cat is talking about with family at Thanksgiving Dinner if he thinks a Mandarin Oriental super tall building in Brickell Key, Miami, United State of America!!!

If this is uninteresting….you must be an incredibly interesting person doing incredibly interesting things!!!

Mom, Dad, great question! What have I been up to? Things more interesting than skyscrapers!!!

By the way….thanks for the interesting comment, Dick.

Honestly, I wish they would have kept the old Mandarin Oriental.

Other than its height I can’t decide whether I like this building or not …

This would be a good spot for a an upside down U shape like those new picture frame towers that frame the city.

Brickell Key is the best Brickell amenity, and the new park they added to the island looks really nice!

How are sales going for Swire with the new tower?

They are 60% committed and the EXACT programming is still flux.

Personally, I cannot think of a more important piece of real estate than this. Continuum South Beach was a once in a lifetime development, and this one is similarly irreplaceable.

Claughton Island for the win!

I wish we had a gondola ride that takes you from top of this tower to Brickell Station at the Underline. How cool would it be to sore right into Brickell City Centre and all the new attractions.

while i’m more than excited for these 2 new towers, will be sad to see the old MO building gone

They should have kept the old MO and just add more hotel space and the resi tower.

…and every Arquitectonica building constructed in the last ten years have aged any better?

I suppose it makes sense if old hotel is in a better location, hence the taller tower is replacing it. Still, the replacement hotel tower needs to look better than the boorish tree trunk proposed.

At least be some unique shape like the sails of Dubai or the shard in London or the sleek towers in Sunny Isles.

Yes…and only for nostagia’s sake.
Like I missed it when the Blue Parrot bar left.

I was in the Mandarin Oriental’s sales center yesterday. It will be a few years, but when this is completed NO ONE will miss the old set up.
The current short layout takes up a lot a space on the envelope.
These two towers will open up a lot of waterfront pedestrian space and a lot of more thoughtful experiences.

It is a huge win for one of the best pieces of real estate in Florida.
