Brightline Ridership Up 78% In First Half Of 2023

Brightline ridership and revenue continues to surge, the company told investors last week.

Through the first six months of 2023, there were a total of 956,120 passengers who rode Brightline – up 78% from the same period in 2022 when there were 538,140 passengers.

Revenue for the company is rising even faster, up 129% in the first half of 2023 to $30.2m (compared to $13.2m in the first six months of 2022).

A Brightline forecast in 2017 had projected 2.9 million passengers on the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach route, but an analysis by a bond rating firm had projected the service could still be profitable with much fewer passengers.

Service to Orlando remains on track to begin this summer, last week’s investor report said.

Doing more for transportation than our elected leaders in Miami ever have.

I’m secretly hoping they resurrect Flagler’s overseas railroad one day in the future

Sadly, there’s no space to do that without getting rid of the overseas highway which will never happen. Train to Naples and Fort Myers would be cool though I assume that also will never happen due to environmental impact. Unless it can fit in the I 75 ROW

Why not? Freeways in Tampa have space reserved for the government HSR to nowhere.

The columns are literally still there…its right next to the highway.

Yea…no. Ignoring all the limited land that needs to be acquired, everything will need to be redone, and the costs to build over water are astronomical. Lets not even discuss the maintenance due to salt water and the ocean wind beating the infrastructure daily…plus the question of the Keys very existence in the not too distant future…

At the end of the day the demand does not cover the costs. The return of the Oversea Railway to Key West only exists in rail-fans dreams. (Sadly…)

They’ll never run to Naples and Ft. Myers because the population there isn’t high enough and there isn’t enough activities to bring tourists there from Miami.

Tri Rail.

2019 had 4,500,000 passengers a year.
2022 Post Covid 3,050,000 passengers a year

Basically 1.5x Brightline ridership.

Just a shame tri county and state leadership bends over backwards for Brightline. Yet our current workhorse TriRail gets the crumbs and barely a mention from county commissioners. (Next Miami and Miami Today, do a great job)

Eulois and David have been better for the system. But as a long time rider it’s sad that the system has to live in the shadow. There’s a alot of small things that could make those 3,000,000 passengers lives better.

Apples and Oranges: Brightline is intercity rail and a private company financed by investors. Tri-rail is a commuter rail system by the government funded from your tax dollars. If you read lately Tri-rail just got around a 75 million dollar grant from the Feds for upgrades. They’re going to order 6 new train sets but don’t expect them for a few years. There is such demand for passenger equipment right now all the manufacturers are backed up.

I’m going to guess we’ll hear more about it after the Orlando line is running. I look forward to it and will ride it. I may never drive I-4 again.

You see, if Rick Scott had taken the FED money to build a HSR, it still wouldn’t be done yet plus the State of Florida was always on the hook for the vast operating expenses. This way a private company is getting it done and done the right way.
