Cathay Pacific has been trying to add a flight to Miami from their base in Hong Kong, but they don’t yet have a plane that is capable of flying the route with reasonable economics.
Now, Airbus is considering building such a plane. Tentatively called the A350-8000, it would be a stretched version of the A350, with capacity for over 400 passengers.
Cathay’s CEO told Bloomberg that the company is interested in the proposed plane specifically because it would be capable of flying to Miami.
The airline is also holding talks with Rolls Royce about building an engine powerful enough to fly the HKG-MIA route.
Airbus is still gauging interest in the A350-8000 and hasn’t committed to building it yet.
