Chaos: Crowds Of Pedestrians Storm Brickell Bridge While It Is Still Raised

Pedestrians waiting to cross the Brickell Avenue bridge appeared to have no patience this past weekend, storming past protection barriers, according to a video posted to the Only In Dade Twitter account this weekend.

The social media account wrote that the incident occurred while crowds were leaving Ultra Music Festival.

In the southbound lanes, pedestrians can be seen jumping from the still raised portion of the bascule bridge to the already lowered section

Pedestrians also began to walk on the raised northbound lane while it was still being lowered.

The Brickell bascule bridge is said to be raised around 5,000 times per year, for around 5 to 10 minutes at a time. That would equate to around 14 times per day, or an average of an hour or two daily.

How stupid is it to have the bridge go up for one boat in the middle of the night RIGHT AS ULTRA IS ENDING?

This bridge seems to always open for one person making literally thousands wait. The gates are also the slowest thing in the world to open once the bridge has been down for over a minute.

They’ve ‘upgraded’ this bridge, but installed the slowest motors that make everyone impatient. Good job, FDOT — you’ve failed again.

you are so very correct….one boat screws hundreds…..

How stupid is it to not wait a few minutes to cross the bridge when it is up? Like they have somewhere oh so important to walk to in the middle of the night after a concert. Oh well, it’s only THEIR lives at stake.

when it goes down, then there will be another yacht and they will have to wait another 5 minutes

Ubanist, get educated on the laws of navigation.
The Miami River was there before the Brickell Bridge or any of the lawless monkeys who can obey basic pedestrian instruction.

Whats next…. NEW gates and systems to “protect” the morons from themselves??

What is surprising is that there are no law enforcement officers to help calm down the mob of deadbeats.

Get educated on updating laws to suit current needs. Just because something ‘has always been’ does not mean it should continue to always be.

Yes, it’s all the FDOT and bridge’s fault over a bunch of erratic people with impaired judgement.

How stupid are these people walking across a bridge that’s closed? They could have been killed. People have died doing this.

Multiple problems with the bridges in Brickell. Sure, there is a ban on opening the bridge during rush hour, but one of the “exceptions” to this ban are the tug boats/container ships they tow. These large ships cause the longest opening times/worst traffic backups.

As for the weekends, too many one-at-a time yachts cause it to open frequently. It should only open on a set schedule like many of the other area bridges.

i think because the waterway is so narrow they have to do it ad hoc, right?

dont really have enough sapce for all the ships to mill about and wait while they open/closed on a schedule

Really? Open up the bridge when Ultra is ending? This bridge always has the worst timing

If its not cargo or a emergency vessel it shouldn’t be opening for large events or rush hours for private boats going to kikis.

This kind of behavior is what promotes the cancellation of events. Next year when they cancel the shit out of it, all of these idiots would be crying at home wondering why was it cancel. Opening the bridge at that time was stupid and ridiculous but it doesn’t give an excuse for stupidity. Since Covid I don’t know what is going through peoples brains. Not much for sure!!!

BUILD A TUNNEL ! ! !

The south Miami ave bridge has enough room around it to install tunnel entrances and for boring equipment could be place. I think it would be a better idea for the South Miami Ave bridge

It’s a good thing this wasn’t the other side of the bay, because then the leaders will say we need to ban bridges. Instead, it’s we need more parking and why were they walking in a non-pedestrian and bicycle city?

I wonder if the city is gonna announce a curfew because of this?

Anonymous

A curfew wouldn’t do anything to stop them. What needs to happen is road blocks strategically set up in Brickell and police seizing and destroying their non-permitted vehicles upon seizure.

Anon

Maybe get rid of car traffic in downtown / Brickell instead of complaining about pedestrians.

Funny how they’re referred as the “drunk and drugged up people” when it’s the ULTRA crowd but when its the spring break or the Memorial Day Weekend crowd, then they’re referred as the “criminal and twerking ghetto” people.
