Commissioners Vote in Favor Of 42-Story Tower

Miami-Dade commissioners voted today to approve a zoning application for a 42-story tower next to a historic church.

The favorable vote came at a county Comprehensive Development Master Plan & Zoning meeting.

The approval is for a special exception for a general development plan, under Miami-Dade’s Rapid Transit zoning plan.

In order to gain approval, the developer agreed to build two enhanced pedestrian crosswalks, at an estimated cost of $750,000. They will also contribute $250,000 towards repairs and upgrades to the Adrienne Arsht Metromover Station.

The building is planned to include:

  • 462 apartments
  • 552 parking spaces
  •  over 14,000 square feet of space for the Trinity Episcopal congregation

Key International is partnering with the Diocese of Southeast Florida on the project, with the developer signing a 99-year lease for the church-owned land.

The existing historic church will be preserved as part of the plan.

It looks good and how a building should look. Not every new building has to look like a strange caricature of some sort.

Waterfront buildings should be more iconic! What is this thing?!

Rivers Cuomo

Not on the waterfront for one thing.

What’s going on with the land across from it? Didn’t it sell like a billion or something?

Deal fell through in 2023. Don’t think there’s been any news since then.

Looks very boring, but I’ll take it over the nothingness that’s currently on that site. Plus, it looks like they’re leaving green space along the corner.

I believe there will still be an empty lot at the corner where a hotel was proposed at one point.

Just when you think the architecture can not get cheaper and uglier, we are presented with this gift.
We need more enlightenment Miami-Dade commissioners . They are visual illiterates or just do not care. Perhaps they think its a good thing to live among grey boxes

Well that should be the UDRB’s job, and look how they ruined First and Fifth and let this pass.

Rivers Cuomo

C’mon….keep it fair. That’s not cheap.

The man who used his money, brain to negotiate the land lease, and has the balls to develop and build a 42 story tower isn’t “presenting you a gift” to you or anyone. It is what they do for a living.

Appreciate that there are men who actually build things.

Your prose IS great, and I enjoy your comments. But please, channel that energy into building a 42 Story building better than this one.
If you can get close, I’ll invest with you.

The building looks straight out of 1985 but whatever…

It’s such a shame the church feels this is complimentary to the beautiful style of the church itself…..I understand this will help the church financially…but what a disappointment this tower is ….not even the slightest nod to the churches architecture……

The color looks like something that belongs in Seattle Washington. The amount of glass used is decent though.

The developer should build something like that Ponce Park building announced in Coral Gables that will blend with the church. This is right by the water. Up the standard

Nice place for those Metromover lovers…only 450 ft from the station.

What the…? Really? Looks like a 1970s throwback … and not in a good way. Why approve this?

Rivers Cuomo

Because in the USA, people have private property rights.
If you can do better, there are plenty of lots to buy and churches to do deals with. Go get ’em tiger.

Pretty sure this one has a green wall and what looks like a stone feature. Most likely will be painted but it’s there.

Nice building but I don’t think it should be waterfront. Should be something more iconic

Rivers Cuomo

You can’t see that it isn’t on the waterfront?

Usually the beta males that post here get excited when there a dumbed down cross walks, big wide sidewalks, and close proximity to the government transportation.

You can’t please all the people all the time.

Miami is and remains a Banana backwater, not even remotely world class. Only in such a place would they build a metal roofed warehouse next to one of the most prime bayfront lots.

Rivers Cuomo

No brain. No future.
That temporary structure on the bayfront is there to host the largest international boat show in the world and Art Basel; the most important art fair in the world.
Just across the bay from the largest cruise ship port in the world.

Other than that, Miami is just a backwater.

Jeremey Howlett

This is just bad planning. The church should be moved across the street to the south. Possibly right on the waterfront where the boat show is held. The marine stadium should be where all boat shows are held in the future. This church needs to be surrounded by expansive lawns and lush gardens.

The historically designated church is one of Miami’s best architecture. More like any redevelopment of the Omni International Mall should open up a sightline to enhance the urban realm in relation to it.

Jeremey Howlett

I think the church should be centered right on NE 14th st. And herald plaza. That way people have a clear sight of the church when they are passing by, going to do whatever it is they do in Miami and Miami Beach. The back side of the church shouldn’t be hidden behind a big brown concrete building. It deserves to be on a site clear and free of any distraction or obstruction.

Actually, it’s the A&E District, historically called Miramar. Edgewater starts further up the street at Opera Tower and Margaret Pace Park

I think Park West (with Worldcenter) will be the best neighborhood but, in any case, this isn’t even in Brickell but it’s in Edgewater.
