Commissioners Vote In Favor Of 70-Story Brickell Tower

Brickell’s planned 70-story Calle 8 tower received a key approval from Miami-Dade last week.

County commissioners voted unanimously to approve a special exception for a general development plan for Calle 8. The vote came at Miami-Dade’s Comprehensive Development Master Plan & Zoning.

Commissioner Eileen Higgins noted several positive aspects that the development would bring to Brickell, including its striking design.

The development innovatively manages the way traffic is handled off the street, she said. All circulation will happen internally.

The developer has also increased a public benefits contribution to $1 million. The funds will go towards nearby transit stations.

Calle 8 is planned to rise 70 stories, or 736 feet above ground level and 750 feet above sea level, and include:

  • 464 residential units
  • 75,736 square feet of performing arts, with theater seating spread over 8 levels
  • 653 parking spaces, with the highest garage floor on level 15

BMA is the design architect, with DAC the architect of record.

Millennium Developments of Brickell is the developer.

The closest thing to a spire in our mostly flat top skyline . I wish it surpassed the monstrous panorama in height. This building will stand out like no other from afar. Not sure about the name little Havana tower .

But for some reason it was downgraded from 800 ft and 70 actual floors to only 700 ft with 60 some floors…

It feels like a waste of time and energy to drive up and down 15 floors to park a car

It might have a auto elevator like some buildings, albeit this one hopefully more reliable and breaks down less than Metromover.

Impressed by the strategic leadership and thoughtful planning gone into this development by all those involved. Such a win for all of Miami, Downtown and Brickell!

Hope to see more crosswalks and public art and design projects along the sidewalks here.

I hope it’s the Opera or something cultural, broadway, dance, orchestras.

The height has been downgraded from 800x ft high to 730. It won’t even be in the top 10 tallest in the city by the time it’s done, even accounting for it’s ‘high elevation’ location.

Great design, awesome garage

Another parking garage high rise, just a block away from public transportation

It’s as if most people do not rely on the government trains as their first choice in transportation.

Most people who live in the urban core now do rely on public trains for transportation.

It only has 58 actual floors plus a few fake floor outlines in the spire. More than 100 ft and about 10 floors were removed compared to the first reveal, but the design is the same, which is nice, but this is not a huge building anymore. The wedge is floor 41 counting the large ground floor lobby as two floors, 42 when skipping floor 13.

I see it as Big Lips or Big Mouth Building.
Nothing to do with Calle 8

It’s on Eighth Street. Outside of Little Havana, yes but then again, Calle 8 itself is on the southern edge of its actual boundaries when it’s portrayed as if its the center.
