It’s hard to overstate just how much more impressive and economically significant this current Miami boom cycle (2012 to present) has been when compared with the previous cycle (2002-2008) and that one was amazing in its own right.

Most cities in the US other than New York City and maybe Chicago would be thrilled to have just the Brickell City-Centre and MiamiCentral Complex projects underway during the same time frame. And yet, Miami has those two and so much more going on that it is almost impossible to keep track of it all. What is most impressive in my view is that it is not only luxury condo towers in this boom but also major museum projects, office buildings, mixed-use projects, massive retail centers and a vast new, privately-funded intercity rail project (and still yet more) all happening at once. This is why people are talking seriously about Miami’s rapid transformation into a bona fide world-class city.

I went through it for the first time in months on Metrorail yesterday and was impressed. It’s major infrastructure. I’m glad the Brightline will exist though I don’t see myself taking it, it will be good for getting cars off the streets. I hope. I’m more excited about the Trirail expansion to downtown that will make it much easier and faster for me to see family in Palm Beach County without having to take Metrorail to Hialeah first. Especially if they decide to do the Coastal Link expansion.
