Construction Permit Pending For Surface Parking Lot At Former Skyrise Site

A construction permit to build a surface parking lot at the former Skyrise site has been submitted to Miami’s Building Department.

Last year, the developer of the Skyrise tower announced that the project was being cancelled.

Under the terms of a deal negotiated with the city, a parking lot is required to be restored if the development wasn’t built.

Bayside’s owners were granted the rights to two multi-decade lease extensions for the mall property in exchange for allowing the Skyrise project.

According to the construction permit application, there is an estimated $200,000 cost to build the parking lot.

Plans for the surface lot were filed in December 2021 as part of the construction permit application, and are still under review.

The property was previously a surface parking lot, before sitework for Skyrise began.

The most amazing waterfront location and the best we can get is a parking lot. SAD!

Reminds me of the idiotic surface parking lot next to the so-called Freedom Tower.

A parking lot is probably less expensive to maintain and insure than a construction site. Also trivial to demolish if a development ever gets momentum.

I absolutely agree since one of bernies key points is the elimination of waterfront parking lots 👍

It’s disappointing to just have an ugly parking lot in such a prime location.

What a shame! They should build an observational tower there as they got a lease extension based on those terms. Remove the lease if a parking lot is built there. Frankly redo the entire Bayside Market in the process because it no longer matches the growing area. It is outdated beyond repair.

I think this was all a ploy for bayside’s lease extension. Genius and super sad. All these deals that the city of miami does really do scream fraud. The Wharf park land, the Soccer Stadium, the marlins stadium, the crandon park marina lease voter referendum….. Hmmm this list could go on.. and on.

It “not longer matches the growing area?” Oh so you want three gunmetal grey cereal boxes with juxtaposed balconies designed by Arquitectonia?

He thinks it should emulate Bal Harbor Shops. Probably makes under $80k/yr himself but thinks all of Miami should be upscale. Save Miami for the rich people.

Skyrise had an Observational [sic] tower and the “WE-NEED”s bitched and complained that the man taking action should do better work for the WE-NEEDs who only take a do not give a thing.

So is bayside ever going to get renovated like they claim it would four years ago ?

(it is needed)

The renovation looked hideous, however. It should be made more like Mary Brickell Village, adding a hotel and residential tower, and better integrating it with Bayfront Park and FTX Arena.

the last thing we should do is build a residential tower in Bayside

Can they please renovate the shit out of Bayside? So outdated for the prime location

As soon as they renovate it, the rent goes up and you’ll hear people whine about that.

Bayside was renovated a couple of years ago.the renovations were minor and it still has a tacky vibe

It’s a “festival marketplace” in an architectural style fit for a bayside marina. It’s not supposed to look like a damn Apple Store. If you want that, go to the Design District.

It’s a tourist trap for cruise ship vacationers to pass some down time buying worthless trinkets and eating food court grub. It isn’t meant to be Bal Harbor Shops.

Same as that huge parking garage at the PortMiami (western edge).
Everytime I drive over the Rickenbacker, I am in awe at those amazing parking spaces with their $1M views.

Honestly long term I want to see more green space. Like maybe turn that part of the dock into a green park, just grass and a few trees. I hate that every public land needs a building. Im still salty they took away bicentennial park for the museums.

Right. What we need are more cigarette box-shaped, Soviet-style buildings. Do you have any developers in mind that could help?

there has to be a better idea for that lot. Maybe have a contest by designers. The one that wins can place their name into it. Hared to believe that no one can figure what to do with the area.

They could have eliminated or greatly reduced Bayside for more green space, art, statues, or other public amenities. Redistribute all the displaced retail and restaurant space into some needed parts of downtown, which forces tourists or locals to walk around downtown to eat at Bubba Gump (expand the tourist trap).

Anonymous

It’s flanked by two underutilized parks, but lets tear something on prime real estate down for more “green space,” meaning shadeless dog bathrooms.

Build sky rise Miami. What a stupid idea to cancel this game changing project. It would’ve given the city of Miami an iconic structure. Stupid. Bring the project back. And do 4th of July fireworks there on the water. Sky rise was the project that downtown Miami and bayside needed. What a dumb mistake to not have seen it through. Bring the sky rise project back.
