David Beckham Tells Amazon: ‘I Chose Miami, You Should Too’

David Beckham is lobbying for Amazon to choose Miami as a site for HQ2.

Beckham made an appearance in a video with Mayor Francis Suarez this week. In it, he tells Amazon: “I Chose Miami, You Should Too.”

Meanwhile, it has emerged that both Beckham and Amazon could be eyeing the same piece of land as a potential site for either HQ2 or a soccer stadium, according to Doug Hanks.

Jorge Mas, who recently joined Beckham’s soccer partnership as an investor, is said to be dissatisfied with the size and location of the Overtown site chosen by the group. Instead, he has been scouting alternatives, including Doral and the 180-acre Melreese golf course next to Miami International Airport.

Mas has said that Melreese is also being pitched to Amazon, Hanks wrote.

Cannot believe that of all places in Miami, Jorge is looking into Doral as a potential site. This is preposterous!!!!
No mass transit, not in the city of Miami, away from the city center.
I just hope this doesn’t happen.

Anonymous

I doubt this happens as they would need to get MLS approval for any stadium outside of the city limits

Anonymous

So what’s the play? They want a better price of the land ?

Anonymous

I think they are looking for a less residential area and more land to put parking. Either way this is pretty close to the MIC so it would be still within walking distance to be honest. if they put it on the north side of the golf course.

What are you talking about? Malrese is next to the airport metro rail station. Stop knee jerk reacting lol

Anonymous

Please keep stadium by the river Beckham..the entire core of Miami is being redeveloped including Overtown.. plenty of parking and metro rail station nearby.

Moving the stadium is a picture perfect example of what is wrong with Miami. The Overtown site gives them the opportunity to build out an entertainment district around the stadium. When will we learn? Putting the stadium next to a highway with ample parking only creates a lifeless structure. No pre and post game life.

Has anyone seen the news about Brightline’s usage in Broward and Palm Beach? The Overtown site allows for Broward and Palm Beach fans to come to games as well. No vision…

You nailed it!!!!

How’d that work out for the area around the Marlins Park?

Anonymous

Slap in the face to fans and the city if they build outside of the dense urban area.

Melreese isn’t THAT far, let’s be honest. Plus it’s near the airport and a major transportation hub so it would be realtively easy to get there. I don’t think the site in Overtown is big enough to properly give owners what they want. Plus, the push back from residents there might may this process even longer to build.

When I first read the article I had your same reaction but after doing some research I found that Melreese is not far removed from Downtown. Furthermore it is just a short 5 to 10 minute walk from the Metro Station, Tri-Rail, and Brightline. The area is big enough to house a Stadium and Amazon. This could be a win – win – win situation for Becks, Bezos, and soccer fans. Keeping fingers crossed.

Melreese is NOT a 5-10 minute walk from bright line.

Saying Melreese isn’t far from downtown is literally the same as saying the airport isn’t far from downtown. Meh.

I lose serious interest if it’s not downtown.

Really???

Agreed. If its not downtown I’m not going. And lets be honest isn’t a city full of die hard fans. When I go to Heat games I run into plenty of people who are there just to hang out. That wouldn’t be the same if the arena was in the suburbs with nothing around it.

Especially in Doral, wrong place to put up a stadium

Anonymous

I like the video. It was cute using the kids as a pitch to Amazon. I like Mayor Suarez’s energy and enthusiasm as well.

When I look aerial views of downtown and surrounding areas all I see is vacant land. Enough land to build a stadium or HQ2. Look at the land up for grabs literally next to Brightline next to the post office. If you assembled enough of that land it’s more than enough for the soccer stadium or HQ2. What about the arts and entertainment district? All that damn land would be perfect for a stadium or HQ2. I don’t understand who they hired to look for land but it’s plenty close to downtown that’s just sitting there. You want it to be close to downtown close to rail and restaurants and entertainment. Same with HQ2 why would to want to be in Doral? You put it in downtown with the rest of the tall towers that are already permitted to 1069ft.

People like you talk as if all these lots are just free land ready for the grabbing. All this land is mostly privately owned and buying and assembling it is not as easy as you think it is.

Its been a while since I’ve read Amazon’s criteria, but I don’t remember ‘soccer star endorsement’ being on there.

We have the best looking mayor in all the USA.

Anonymous

The mayor could have appeared at a spot with our magnificent skyline behind him, instead of a marina that could have been anywhere. The inclusion of the kids was fine, but Beckham’s shot seems like a last minute add-on.

Alan

Oh come on now… who needs a skyline when you can grab Becks coming out from a quick lunch shoving a mic in his face in front of a an enclosed wooden garbage bin standing next to an upside bucket on the ground. They know the viewer will only focus on David therefore rendering any scenic background useless.

Anonymous

I second that! Hottie.

Anonymous

Amazon, wouldn’t you like to hang around with such a handsome mayor? He is definitely a hottie

Why not build the new stadium in Homestead? Plenty of cheap land for a bigger stadium, more parking, less traffic etc. ; or maybe build it in Broward County; that would reduce the traffic in Miami-Dade. Even better, build the stadium in Alabama; then when there are no soccer games we could attend some good football games. Or the ultimate site would be on Mars, because in the future everyone wants to go there.

Be serious, build the new soccer stadium in the site already selected; I am only one fan, but if they build the stadium anywhere outside the city limits of Miami, I am one fan that would never go to a game if the tickets were free and I could go to the game in a free limousine.

Mr. Beckham has chosen Miami as the site for his new soccer franchise after considering many other cities. Obviously a man of super intelligence. I hope Mr. Bezos is equally intelligent. Miami is also the best site for Amazon’s new headquarters. Rather than list the virtues of the other potential cities, list the disadvantages of Miami; I am not aware of any. Like most people who live in Miami, I am not native born; however, some twenty years ago I had the option of relocating to ANY city in the world. I chose Miami. From my first day in the City of Miami until now I know I made the right decision. If you live here, and you think there is a better city in the world, my suggestion would be to move there. Most cities can be reached on a non-stop flight. If the trip would take more than one stop, you might want to reconsider your choice.

That would be amazing!!!Yes Amazon, come to Miami. Bienvenidos a Miami 🙂

If it goes to the Melreese Country Club, will we get a Metrorail extension? As for Doral… NO GOD! PLEASE NO! NOOOOOOOO!

Anonymous

nonsense…this is BS

Anonymous

Jeez, they couldn’t have picked a more scenic place to do the video with Becks? Also, I’m all for the Melreese site. A little out of the way yes, but much larger to truly give Miami a stadium to be proud of. Rather it be in the burbs than in the ghetto TBH.

Anonymous

“Out of the way” but better? Lmao no.

Anonymous

I said just a little. Get it right. The distance is not far enough to be a deal breaker imho.

Anonymous

Melrose would be most inappropriate. Remember the FAA! That close to the airport directly to the east/southeast. Amazon would be lucky to build a one-story bldg. Too off the beaten path for a stadium.

Anonymous

Hmm, you do have a point there.
