FAT Village Breaks Ground, Will Have 850 Residential Units

Fort Lauderdale’s FAT Village has broken ground after developers secured $220m in construction financing.

The development site spans 5.6 acres over two city blocks, and will include:

  • 850 residential units
  • 200,000 square feet of Class AA office space
  • 80,000+ square feet of food, shopping, entertainment, art studios, and galleries
  • 1,200 parking spaces

Completion is planned in 2026.

Hines and Urban Street Development are the developers.

FAT sounds awesome wdym?

FAT village stands for flagler arts technology village. I know jealous people from Miami want to nitpick because the development is actually outstanding besides its name

It is beautiful. I’d like to see more red buildings like 360 Rosemary designed in Brickell and downtown Miami.

People here would complain about a a “souless box” or “another rectangle building”

You appear to be missing a key point. People usually don’t complain about rectangle buildings when they are low rises, designed well with interesting details. When the buildings go above six floors, packed densely, people seem to get upset about lack of shape and soul.

360 Rosemary has huge public gardens on all four corners and retail space, not a rectangle, wish our buildings had corner cutouts with gardens.

Not sure what the acronym stands for, but that is some fancy stuff for Fort Lauderdale. High quality exterior materials like dark tinted glass will bring a refreshing flavor to the city.

Why they call it FAT Village? It’s for obese residents only?

Flagler Arts and Tech.

Ever heard of Google?

I like FLAT more, same acronym, but more appealing and goes with city living. Flat Village sounds cooler.

FLAT sounds like a bomb was dropped on it and theres nothing left….

I was thinking of condo flats in a city, maybe add an S? Flagler Arts Technology and Science village. Just helping with the “fat” part. Maybe FLATS Village.

They’re not going to rename their neighborhood because you dont like it

anonymous

Rename it? Isn’t that what’s being proposed? Never heard of any neighborhood called FAT Village. Sounds like misappropriation of the urban word PHAT. The neighborhood is known as Flagler Village, which sounds better than FAT.

It’s been called FAT Village for years….I used to go to the weekly art walk there

I didn’t say I don’t like it, just responding to the confused and critical comments.

Thats what they call houses in England

Anon

in england Flats are lateral (flat) apartments, what we call a duplex apartment would be an apartment, and a house is a house 🙂

Is it supposed to be a play on PHAT the cool version of FAT, not the kind people want to remove?

2006 called. They want their buzzword back.

ITT, more folks complaining about names and offering worse suggestions.

Outstanding project. I love the red and black contrast. Reminds me of Natiivo going up in downtown Miami.

This was not what the proposed site looked like.
This whole area is soulless, plain and as always not forward looking at all. SAD

Frankly, I think it developing nicer than Melotopia a.k.a. the A&E District.

The area is already called Fat Village. It stands for Flagler Arts Technology. It is Fort Lauderdale’s wannabe version of Wynnwood.

Anonymous

No it’s not, it’s called Flagler Village. Looks like they are trying to modernize it now. Flagler Village sounds great, but FLATS Village is an alternative and goes with the new look.

Flagler Village is to the East – they are two separate areas. FAT Village has been an area for at least a decade – they had a weekly art walk before the warehouses were demolished for this development.

Thanks for sharing. I didn’t know that. Thought it was a new proposal. It looks like a really vibrant and artistic area. Can’t wait to check it out!

Did Weird Al name this neighborhood? the guy not the midguided computer programs.

Computers are awesome. Bernie said we can reduce the work week for everyone to 32 hours with Ai now. We get more done than we did 75 years ago when 40 hour work weeks were created.

So we’ll become a bunch of FATs like in that Pixar movie with the robot?

OR the opposite, we won’t be stuck at a desk our entire lives and can go to the gym and outside more.
