FPL Wants To Install Solar At Metrorail Station To Power New Transit Oriented Development

A residential development currently under construction could be powered by solar panels installed at an adjacent Metrorail station.

Metro Grande is being built next to the Okeechobee station.

Construction is well underway, photos by MiamiSprings.com show.

The development planned to have a combined 286 apartments, along with retail, with Cornerstone Group the developer. Behar Font is the architect.

Miami-Dade commissioners are scheduled to vote on an easement today allowing FPL to install the solar equipment at the station, which will provide electricity to the new apartments.

FPL will pay the county $1 for the easement, according to the proposed resolution.

This should be happening at all of the metro stations. The roofs arent being used so this give some extra purpose to them.

I only wish the one by my house near the Vizcaya Station became a reality! We need the density and mix-use concept near The Roads.

all the NIMBYs in the Vizcaya Station dont want to see any redevelopment. But eventually it will happen

With Vizcaya-influenced architecture and not like those Douglas Road atrocities, I hope.

Agreed! There were a few interesting proposals from multiple developers, with Related’s being my least favorite, The 13th Floor Development/The Adler Group submitted something in sync with the neighborhood.

I hope it happens soon enough! The station looks worse now than before, with the Underline finished parallel to it. It is an eyesore!

What do you called Southwest 3rd Avenue?

Is the station sandwiched between The Roads and Coral Way neighborhoods? 31st Rd. crosses SW 3rd Ave. by the station; what am I missing?

$1 dollar rent? This should be an RFI to private solar installers. Not to the behemoth power company.
Let them pay a portion of the power savings in rent payments. I’m sure FPL is going to charge tenants the regular power rate while the county gives them free roof space.

Billy Bob Solar will skip town after the next hurricane, or when the panels need to be replaced and disposed of property.

Will this mean Metrorail stations will see even the slightest renovations?
