Groundbreaking Announced For Waldorf Astoria, Miami’s First Ever Supertall: New Details

A groundbreaking ceremony is planned this week for Waldorf Astoria Miami, the first ever supertall in the city, and new details of the construction process have been revealed.

A formal groundbreaking ceremony will take place on October 27, but construction is actually already underway.

The tower will rise 100 stories and 1,049 feet, making it the first in Miami to reach supertall height and the tallest residential building south of New York City.

Condos in the tower are 87% sold, with a total of 360 private residences planned. The height and design alone have been an attraction to buyers, developers said. There will also be 205 hotel rooms and suites.

The developers told the Herald that drilling and concrete pouring is now underway to build piles for the foundation, reaching 180 feet below ground.

A foundation permit has been issued, and the foundation is expected to take about 10 months to build.

A construction permit to begin vertical work is expected to be issued within months, so work won’t be slowed down, the developers said.

Completion is planned in about four and a half years.

The developers say they have studied New York’s Steinway tower to refine the design of the Waldorf.

The Waldorf will have a 600-ton tuned mass damper near the top to ensure motion is imperceptible. It will be the first in Miami.

Other features will include elevators that move at 1,800 feet per minute – six times the speed of normal elevators.

PMG and Greybrook are the developers.

Carlos Ott and Sieger Suarez are the architects.

wow; those will be very fast elevators

Yeah! Acording to this, it would have the 5th fastest elevator in the world! https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/man-made-engineering-marvels-the-fastest-elevators-in-the-world.html

Express elevators. They have been around for 50+ years.

The Waldorf will forever change the feel of Miami and become a landmark of the city. Look forward to seeing the tower coming up from the Rickenbacker Bridge!

Elevators will move up to 1800 feet per minute at peak which is about 20 miles per hour, not near record fast elevator speed btw, but it will still take two minutes to reach the top because of the acceleration times.

Or longer if you have a lot of rush hour “traffic.” Ever tried going to see someone in Panorama Tower between 6 and 8pm? The wait for an elevator is horrendous.

Unfortunately Miami (not referring to quality developments like this) will be polluted with majority crap architecture for the foreseeable future. In the 80s it was pretty much a blank canvas. What a shame

You are right. In the 80s it was a few office buildings (which by the way are still the tallest buildings in Miami) that made up the skyline. The pollution that you speak of began during the 2000s condo boom and yeah it really set our city back because now the skyline cannot be undone unless they just demolish the condos and that’s not going to happen. You cannot undo some things unfortunately.

Looks a helluva lot better than the 26 story crackerboxes going up in Tampa!

This architectural style is commonly referred to as Rubix Pube.

“The developers say they have studied New York’s Steinway tower to refine the design of the Waldorf.” LOL if that was true, there would have been a total redesign. It would be like me saying I studied the design of the Sistine Chapel ceiling and churned out Ecce Mono.

Hopefully another supertall that is actually decent looking will get built so that this Waldorf monstrosity doesn’t stick out so much.

Miami dodged that wacky looking SkyRise crap but the skyline got hit with this.

Well I guess when you play dodge ball you can expect to get hit by a ball every once in a while.

The SkyRise isn’t dead, just on pause. Any developer could come in and pick up the project, and I sure hope they do because Miami needs an observation tower, just like every major city has one. The design was actually nice to me but that’s subjective.

exactly i loved skyrise and we def need a observation tower

Miami can have an observation tower, but not one as wacky looking as the awful looking design we were presented with SkyRise.

^^lol what are they “on pause” for, waiting for the next recession? It’s dead homes.

Not only the observation but the entertainment aspect was going to be awesome for downtown

Are you nuts this is a beautiful skyscraper.

Uh, yeah.. any goofy looking design drawn up for Miami’s first supertall tower would look beautiful as far as you’re concerned.

Long John Silver

No you fool. The design is very unique for Miami because every other “high rise” in Miami looks the same and you know it. It’s about time Miami gets a beautiful glass “super tall” hovering into the clouds. Now either get with the times or get lost.

every high rise in miami looks the same ? aston martin residences , one thousand museum , paramount , southeastern financial and miami tower, all look different

Anonymous

yeah that like 5 out of the literal 60+ skyscrapers in city which are almost all condos and some good buildings but very rare we need more designs like this and the other supertalls being built

Anonymous

Only a fool thinks all the Miami skyscrapers look the same. A greater fool thinks a design is quality only because it is different. There’s a good reason nobody else came up with this clown design in Miami.

Long John Silver

Yes, I will stand by my assertion. *Most* of the high rises in Miami look the same: bland, white, stucco, short, dated designs. Go to any real city and you will instantly know that Miami is inferior when it comes to building designs.

Miami IS a REAL CITY. If you don’t think so then feel free to post on TheNextWherever instead.

No, it’s not. A real city values it’s historic institutions.

The skyline looks inferior due to the number of condo high rises rather than office buildings

it is literally an absolutely beautiful design its brings uniqueness to the very box like condo towers we have all over city

Look, face it, its a “copycat design” that has worn out its “uniqueness” a long time ago.

He’s right that this design is worn out. I agree not box condos but this isn’t unique.

Long John Silver

How is it “worn out” ? Where else have you seen this design in Florida? It is a new design for Miami and it’s the reason why the city is allowing it to be built. So no one cares if you don’t like it. You will be looking at it on Biscayne Blvd. in the near future or you will be turning your head the other way.

*”just like your 8 year old designed it”* only it’s not supposed to fall over…just like your 8 year old imagines too when building his Supertall!

Not complicated.
