January & February Were Both Record Breaking Months At Miami International Airport

Miami International Airport is continuing to see record growth in passenger volumes in 2023.

According to the airport, January and February broke records, with the highest number of passengers ever for those months.

In February, an average of nearly 150,000 travelers per day were travelling to or from MIA.

The spring break travel season currently underway is also expected to break records, the airport said.

All four bond rating agencies have upgraded MIA’s bonds in the past year. The most recent was Fitch, which upgraded Miami International Airport’s revenue and refunding bonds from A to A+ on March 2.

With numbers like this, hopefully the government proposes a more ambitious plan to revamp MIA, preferably raising the ceilings of the check ins and even rebuilding terminal F.

Too bad that renovations to the Central Terminal are moving at a snail pace. Replacing the carpet and adding a new coat of paint won’t do a thing to move MIA to the 21st century.

Rebuilding and replace with Arquitectonica garbage won’t move MIA past to 2050 either. The South Terminal from 2007 is aging worse than the 65-year-old Central Terminal.

The current terminal layout is very inefficient and was typical of the 1960s model. It needs to be completely rebuilt with a new layout.

Salt Lake City Airport just did it.
New York LaGuardia just did it.
Kansas City Airport literally just did it.

Miami should do it too.

Thankfully, the runway configuration and layout is quite efficient and will serve Miami’s needs for a very long time. It’s the terminals that need to go.

I disagree. The runways should be turned slightly towards the northeast to allow higher construction heights in the CBD.

I agree, if they can shift the runways a little, buildings would be able to be built past the 1100ft or so height limit. The demand is definitely there.

Miami doesn’t need taller massive buildings. It has a lot. It needs better infrastructure like the airport and quality of life.

Runways are built to align with historical wind patterns specific to each airport. Aircraft land and take off into the wind. Most of the year the wind is either coming from the east or west, hence the current alignment.

The new Kansas City Airport should be the blueprint, beautiful.

Istanbul and Madrid should be blueprints too. They are the best in the world.

Madrid’s Terminal 4 is beautiful, however, the rest of the terminals are a dump.

Except the LGA terminal was pointlessly rebuilt because the runway layout is too small for modern aircraft.

Why is Kansas City the only one that “literally” just did it?
Did Salt Lake City and LaGuardia expand only figuratively?

Our airport is so dated and ugly – covered head to toe in “popcorn ceiling” texture – yikes!

MIA needs to be completely remodeled and modernized. It’s so outdated and terrible experience. Rated one of worsts one world. I know people who fly to FTL just to avoid MIA.

Interestingly, Barry Sternlicht sited MIA as one of the reasons he relocated his company headquarters to Miami Beach.

They fly to FTL because MIA is a busier airport and the customer service is crap. It has nothing to do with the airport itself.

FLL has built two new concourses, completely renovated another two, and renovated a head house all in the last 10 years or so. Not to mention the huge runway expansion project. MIA has done absolutely nothing, it’s embarrassing

The North Terminal project was a massive project, and so was the South Terminal. They now need to update the Central Terminal. But MIA has had huge changes since 2000.

I wonder who benefited from those contract deals? Not Miami!

Miami Airport is a pig pen. No design and feels like a federal prison. It needs all new like the airports in Istanbul.

Runway expansion at FLL? Highly doubt that. No space

10R/28L used to be much shorter/narrower, not useable for most commercial aircraft. They widened/extended it over US1 ten or so years ago

Miami International Airport needs to be thinking about the long-term future. Frankly, they need to completely recognifure the entire terminal if they want to handle the expected volume of passengers over the next couple of decades. Demolish the current setup and rebuild to have a more EFFICIENT and modern layout, like Denver International or Atlanta International.

We agree! Look at the Istanbul airport or Madrid both beautiful high tech innovative interiors that run efficiently and make people want to get to the airport early.

Miami needs to privatize this airport immediately. We can’t expect the government to improve it.

we need a dedicated metro line from the airport to wynwood, midtown, and edgewater, all leading to downtown. You basically kill like 3 birds with one stone. Parts of the line would have to be underground though

anonymous

there already is a metro rail line. You just have to make one connection and then it drops you off in Brickell/downtown. Did it one coming back from MIA and its very easy to do

He wants a free Metromover ride, that’s all.

Nope. People in Edgewater don’t want to take an Uber to government station haha.
