MDM’s Marriott Expo Center Delayed, Downsized

MDM’s plan to build a hotel and convention center on the former Miami Arena site is being downsized and delayed.

According to the Herald, revisions to the Marriott Marquis Miami Worldcenter Hotel & Expo include:

  • Groundbreaking delayed to first quarter of 2017 (MDM has already missed several previously announced start dates)
  • Hotel will be built in two phases, one with 1,100 rooms and another with 600 rooms. It isn’t clear which is first (original plan was for 1,800 rooms)
  • Announced value of project is $525 million, down from $750 million
  • 365,000 square feet of meeting and conference space, down from 400,000 or 600,000

MDM is still negotiating with the Overtown CRA for a tax incentive deal.

You took the words out of my mouth before I even scrolled down to the comments.

MDM is not an amateur developer. Met 1/2/3/Square, JW Marriott Brickell etc.

met 1,2 & 3 took them 11 years….and they changed plans 100 times…and by the way, met square is just starting…it will take them 13 years to build 4 buildings. same amount of buildings Swire is doing in 2-3 years….please!!!!…and i am not mentioning Related…

you remember this thing called a recession?

Swire will probably be on a lookout for new sizable chunk of land after BCC is completed. They should buy these wannabes out and build something interesting.

So this is another redesign of the first redesign of the design which was always too awesome to ever be built. Who knows how they’ll further water it down if it ever gets built.

Anybody following MWC over the past 10 months could’ve seen this coming. It’s unfortunate but at this point, until I see vertical construction, I’m not confident any of this is getting built.

Wow, that lost its “wow” factor quickly

The problem with Miami WorldCenter is that they locked nobody in to a hard contract. They have no leverage. Nobody knows or understands who owns what. Who is on first base or who is on second base. What a mess. I would be concerned if I had a contract at Paramount.

Why build a hotel in two phases? Build one people rent out rooms so now you have to hear all the construction from phase two? What a joke.

Cash flow and to decrease risk.

This happens all the time. Hyatt at the Chicago convention center built one tower first then the second tower later. I think you all are blowing this change out of proportion. Things are getting built and it is changing this part of downtown for the better.

I believe these developers already know what they truly plan to build from day one.get everyone excited and paint a big picture then once everything is approved show the real plans the old switch an bait. MWC already started an planned ground breaking only weeks after the new plans which tells me it was already planned

Agree. I am sure they have back up plans and they choose their options based on current market or economical situations. Either way let’s say MWC flops (which it probably won’t) the land is cleared out and ready to be built on. If they sell the lots whatever that will be built I assure will overpass Brickell. Maybe office towers???

Delayed again and now a ground breaking in ” 2017 ” ??? And 2 phases for hotels with 1,100 rooms and another with 600 room hotel ?…..wow

And this personally affects you how?.

This affects all of us who take part in these discussions inderectly. I assume that anyone who visits a site called The Next Miami does so because they are interested in the future of this city. We share our excitement when these transformative projects are announced only to be disappointed time and time again as they are redesigned and shrunk until they are just one more insignificant building, mall, park, museum, attraction…you name it. This is why my comments are often sarcastic in nature. I’ve seen this happen too many times. In Miami the train never seems to leave the station. Next stop…Resorts World Miami and Innovation Tower.

The comment was not in regards to a redesign. Read it again.

The comment was “Delayed again and now a ground breaking in ” 2017 ” ??? And 2 phases for hotels with 1,100 rooms and another with 600 room hotel ?…..wow”

1. What’s up with the ugly backwards L feature? Without that I’m sure it looks relatively nice.

2. I really, really want MWC to have multiple floors of apartments and condos above the retail. It simply doesn’t look right in the renderings as 2-3 story no-rises in the heart of downtown.

another year will pass with that desolate area of downtown grossly staring at us …wonderful…
