MIA Now Officially The Busiest International Airport In America

Miami International Airport had more international passengers last year than any other airport in the U.S., according to a newly released ranking.

A total of 13 million international passengers flew through MIA during the year, the 11th most in the world.

MIA also had the most international cargo of any U.S. airport last year, and the ninth most in the world.

It is the first time in recent memory that MIA has topped the passenger rankings, although it has been atop the international cargo rankings for some time.

Overall, the airport saw a strong rebound in 2021 with 37.2 million passengers – double the 18.6 million in 2020.

Cargo volumes broke records once again. In 2021, the airport handled 2.7 million tons of freight, up 17 percent from the the then-record 2.3 million tons in 2020.

There were 387,973 takeoffs and landing at MIA in 2021, up 54 percent over 202 and the ninth most of any airport in the world. It is the highest MIA has ranked by that metric in decades.

Impressive for such a third-world facility…

Speaks volumes for our brand that in spite of the conditions people still want to come visit.

The average person comes to Miami for Miami, not its airport.

That’ll change within 15 years or so.

Not Anonymous

not really, they are only upgrading parts of the Airport, and judging by the renderings, it is going to be more of what we see now.

Honestly, have you seen other American airports? MIA isn’t too bad, relatively speaking.

Pickles

It’s actually a pretty impressive airport. If you fly to LGA, Atlanta, LA many people on here will think otherwise. At least MIA up keeps with their airport.

Have you been to LGA lately?

Also #1 in most inoperative escalators, moving sidewalks and elevators. MIA is an embarrassment. Parking garages are always full and it doesn’t look like there are any plans for improvement in the very near future.

iRideMDT

Why drive? Ride Metrorail.

Anonymous

I tried it a couple times. It takes you to the intermodal center. You then walk to a mover and arrive at the parking garage. From there it’s a really long walk to American terminal.
I’m pro-transit, but that is not well designed.

iRideMDT

Yeah… We make everything more difficult here. This is why were prioritizing a monorail to the beach, instead of a single-seat service from Downtown or MIA…

Anonymous

Yeah, that ride is horrible. I always feel terrible for that family with 4 kids and luggage who land and think that’s they’ll take a train to Miami Beach

Anonymous

You’re pro-transit, as long as stations are right in front of your house and destinations, we get it. If you’ve ever been to cities with proper transit like NYC, London, Tokyo, etc. you would no there’s a lot of walking through long passageways.

Pickles

NYC transit is also very dangerous.

Agree I take metrorail if I can. However, I live in Brickell so it’s easy (17 minutes!)

Exactly, especially since most haters here are always asking for expansion and they never ride it

Great now we could get renovations and letting ride shares pic up in the taxi lanes for the AA arrivals wouldn’t be clogged with traffic.

Urbanist

Ride Share should be in the Taxi Lane 100%. Paint the lanes downstairs different colors, which will make the pick up process in the D terminal easier.

“Are you standing in blue, red, or yellow lanes?”

Now if they could just get their act together getting through immigration they’d be set.
Came in from Madrid on Tuesday. Two lines for hundreds of uS citizens. Took almost two hours. Couldn’t even blame it on AA for a change.

If only the country could get its act together on immigration, period.

Ummm, have you heard of Global Entry? It’s fast and a breeze

Anonymous

No sympathy, sorry. If you fly even once a year, you should have global entry. If you don’t want to be that, use mobile entry (free). There is never more than a 10 minute wait for that line.

First time at MIA in 17 years and quite frankly I was impressed by the airport! The seamless connection from Tri-Rail at the transfer station to the people mover train into the airport and to my gate, thru customs was quick! Kudos to MIA!

I don’t know if it’s all the Cuban beans in Miami or what but the terminals there always smell like someone’s been throwing peo

Anonymous

The worst is when someone’s rips it on the enclosed tram to that ridiculous intermodal hub outside the airport. You get to smell that all the way there

I’m guessing it had a lot to do with California and New York being closed longer than Florida but still very impressive.

As the “left and right” constructs don’t apply any longer, you’re probably a lot closer to Desantis who wants to leave people alone than Grusome newsom who is more of a totalitarian fascist. Scratch a modern “leftist” and usually you find a fascist, which is as far from an anarchist as you can get. I used to be a libertarian, but also consider myself pretty much of an anarchist.

They need to get moving on the new hotel/garage and Central Terminal rebuild. For all the complaining about it, most passengers are in the North Terminal or the South Terminal which are pretty good as American airports go. Really, only Denver comes to mind thats significantly better for me.

TeleDildonics4You

SFO is like the king of airports in America, it’s like being in Canada or Europe or Asia compared with the ghetto-ass airports in most American cities.

Anonymous

You obviously never had the pleasure of dealing with SFO airport. It really isn’t the best, or even 10th best.

Anonymous1

It’s beautiful

Anonymous

For a fifteen-year-old facility, the South Terminal has aged terribly. Dark, depressing, and by Arquitectonica even when they were somewhat decent architects… Whatever would replace the sixty-plus year-old Central Terminal won’t last as long, and be value engineered to the extreme and look terrible. Save the hotel, it’s a MiMo masterpiece.

I just wish the food options would improve. MIA has some of the worst offerings of a major airport IMO. Even smaller regional hubs have better options…

MIA is an embarrassment. They need to look at what LGA, LAX, DEN, or even SLC is doing right now.

Anonymous

I don’t know about DEN or SLC, but LAX is only being renovating in anticipated of the Summer Olympics. LGA was a pathetic pet project by a disgraced Governor, rebuilding an airport with runways too short for modern aircraft, that should have closed with flights absorbed by JFK and EWR, and investment in HSR to take the place of many domestic flights.

GabeS

Last time I was at LAX, I had to walk out of the terminal, on to the tarmac where these dicrepit buses took us to our connecting flight terminal. At least that has never happened to me in Mia. As far as LaGuardia is concerned, it might be a bit newer, but it’s still the crappiest airport next to O’Hare, I have ever been in.

Bob

SLC started a 10 year total rebuild and that is exactly what they are doing. Utah is growing fast , State leadership saw it coming and reacted to it. It’s a smaller airport and they keep building new terminals . TSA security area the most modern that I have seen.

Nevertheless kudos to Miami
