The airport is also poised to grow further with new routes being added by low cost carriers including Frontier and Spirit.
Until this year, MIA ranked as the third busiest international airport, behind JFK and LAX. For the full year ending in March 2019, MIA had 20.6 million international passengers, compared to 33.6 million at JFK and 22.7 million at LAX.
FLL also ranks in the top 10 busiest airport in the U.S. for international passengers.
Still, international passenger traffic at MIA is down significantly in 2021, with just over 5 million international passengers during the first six months of the year, compared to 11.4 million during the same period in 2019.
International passengers normally account for 47% of total traffic at MIA. Through the first six months it was down to 32% of traffic.
