MIA To Break Ground On New Concourse After Record Breaking 2024

Miami International Airport will begin construction on new terminal space next year after a record-breaking 2024.

The airport said yesterday it is on track to pass 55 million passengers by the end of this year – the highest passenger numbers in its history.

It will be the third consecutive year MIA has broken its own passenger records. Until 2022, MIA had never reached the 50 million passenger mark.

The airport will break ground next year on a $746M expansion of the South Terminal, according to the Herald.

The three-level Concourse K expansion will include:

  • six gates for narrow body aircraft (or for three wide-body planes)
  • new airline lounges
  • concession spaces

The gates will be able to accommodate both domestic and international flights.

A report earlier this year said that it would match the existing finishes of the South Terminal.

Contractor selection is expected in mid 2025, with groundbreaking in fall 2025.

Completion is scheduled for Spring 2029.

MIA is also planning renovations and expansions in the Central (2028 groundbreaking) and North Terminals (groundbreaking TBD).

that’s an incredible amount of money for only 6 (realistically 3) new gates…also a laughable timeline (3.5 years?!)

With all of these record years, how is there not a more cohesive master plan?

Miami used to be a top 10 airport in the world based on passenger traffic. It was ranked 14th after the 2022 calendar year. It grew by 3% to 53 million passengers in 2023, but fell to 25th.
All other US airports in the list grew by more than 10%, and China had 10 airports growing by more than 100%. This information can be seen in Wikipedia (“List of busiest airports by passenger traffic”)

It was top ten during Covid when international airports saw traffic collapse and US airports fared much better.

Can someone please explain how an extension of 6 gates cost 3/4ths of $1B?

Isn’t it run by the city commissioners? Maybe that’s why… Meanwhile the escalators/moving walkways are finally getting fixed at a snails pace too

Every time I see the popcorn texture from the 1970s throughout the airport I want to scream – it is everywhere

As someone else noted…study the study for 10 years, to consider thinking about spending an obscene amount of money on 3-6 gates that offer no real value or improve the experience at MIA…only enriching the pockets of the contractors that are “Enchufados” with the county.

I have ZERO faith in this renovation – the work they did on concourses J and G looks like the BEFORE video of an airport renovation. They picked up some grey vinyl from home depot, put it on the floor, and said they “modernized” the concourses.

Really, really garbage work. See for yourself: https://www.miami-airport.com/capital_improvement.asp

they need to demolish and reconstruct this airport from the ground up, and incorporate some outdoor concept terminals with big fans to cool down travelers and natural gardens in them.

The Miami Airport terminals used to be on 36th street.
This airport opened in January 1959 at the dawn of the jet age.

Yes, and it’s aged better than any replacement Arquitectonica bus terminal-looking atrocity. Hopefully the renovations restore the historic, timeless MiMo features, and do away with the hunter green cladding and popcorn ceilings.

What will happen when it rains?

They also NEED to expand Metromover to it, add a space port, and speed bumps on the runways. After all, those airplanes are moving way too fast. It might hurt somebody trying to cross the tarmac.

WE NEED bike lanes in the terminals. And a library.

There should be a library on every corner now that all the payphone booths have been removed.

Libraries are the future.

After everything settle it will cost over a $billions for three gates, way to go MIA! But don’t worry folks, the renovation will continue for the next thirty years or just like concourse G.

All this for 6 new gates? Lmao You’ve got to be kidding me!!

This is a surprising tack on basically just covering where there used to be a small canal, slightly extending the horseshoe terminal building.

No road, No rail, No future

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to retrofit the jet bridges with a secondary access to the back door of the aircraft. If you could double the speed of boarding, and specially deplaning, by using both front and back access to the aircraft, that would act as a huge “expansion” of sorts. For domestic flights you could even offer third or fourth exits through the old school tarmac method.
