Miami Beach Votes To Reopen Ocean Drive To Cars

Miami Beach commissioners voted yesterday to reopen Ocean Drive to vehicular traffic, according to reMiamiBeach.

The street has been closed to cars since May 2020, with expanded seating areas for restaurants during the pandemic.

The city will now open a single lane of traffic within the next 45 days, instead of the two lanes that existed before.

There will also be “parklets” with outdoor seating areas for restaurants, the tweet said.

The city has been planning for a more permanent solution, which is expected to begin construction in December 2023.

The vision for the permanent solution is to be presented in early 2022. A consultant is considering plans both with or without car traffic.

So now on top of the ghëtto already there, we need to add small pënis people with their noisy cars?

They may not have penis size issues, but anybody who needs to be seen “cruising” as you call it certainly has some sort of issue.

Only in America those 6.8 can get so much money and still they refuse to respect the country and society that allowed and pay for them to thrive by only playing a game 🤗
P.S im talking about the political activists that look the other way, when China is the one oppressing people !!

More embarrassment than the south border?
The oil price ?
The inflation ?
The high crime
The incoherent speech on the few interviews?
The hiding or going on vacation in major crisis?
The 100 executives orders in two weeks?
The alignment with the Sanders and AOC that don’t represent the real Democratic Party ?
The highest rate of Covid cases and deaths even with vaccine and therapies?
The betrayal to France deal with the submarine treated
The “ leverage” with the terrorists in Afganistán?
You have to be obsessed like the left wing media with the Capitol issue that is ok when a black police killed an unarmed woman inside the Capitol and goes free and not even charged of manslaughter!

Only in America can one group of people be critiqued harshly no matter what they do 🤗 You don’t hear of it anywhere else because no other country bases every individual’s action on their race. Glad to know that once I start accumulating wealth, I must sacrifice my values and opinions. Guess I’ll be staying broke forever. The same country founded on people literally defying an authoritative form of ruling that walked all over their rights. Now it’s “shut up, we’re throwing money at you why aren’t you satisfied”, this is the country that champions being the free-est and most democratic?

It’s not set in stone. I think the city is trying different pilot projects to see what is best, with safety as the #1 priority. If there weren’t so much crime there, I think the city would keep it pedestrian. From my understanding, the police dept. recommended vehicular traffic to return.

That is ridiculous it looks like a circus at night. Friends won’t go to the restaurants because you can drive up. Instead you have to fight a crowd to get to the restaurant. The whole look of Ocean Drive were the cars and the people.

I’ve always been a supporter of the pedestrian-only model and never even thought of the name as a factor. It should be closed off for expanded restaurant seating, bike lanes, vendors, maybe even a routine farmers market, and renamed “Ocean Walk.” Love that way of thinking!

Anonymous

Too bad, that was an awesome walkable place, back to douchebags in their slingshots. Now criminals can bring guns in their cars all the way to Ocean Drive, and shoot at people without having to get out, or if it all fails they can just run us over.

but it’s the “ large crowd” that created the problem, the violence and the crime !!!

As we all lament the steep decline of south beach, let us at least allow the city of MB… an opportunity to self govern. They need to balance all sorts of soci-economic issues while not displacing all those businesses. What started as a weekend event.. it is now the common denominator. HMMMM.

Anonymous

Nobody wants the cars back. Pedestrians streets add value in the properties all over the world.

Anonymous

Think.
You “get people out of their cars” never think about the obvious

Ocean Drive from 5th to 15th is loaded with hotels. People with money dont arrive at hotels with a backpack. They arrive with spouses, kids, luggage, and a car.

In the hospitality industry “Sense of Arrival” is crucial to a guest experience.

Yes, some body wants cars on Ocean Drive. It’s the people who use it everyday, whose families, employees, and their employee’s families depend on high quality guest experience.

Now we gotta deal again with all these angry driver that don’t understand what a crosswalk is for and have no common courtesy , where do they buy their driving licenses from !

Brooklyn

I think the intent here is not to permanently open it up to cars but to revert back to a hybrid model while a longer term solution is figured out. I think everyone agrees that the idea of a fully pedestrianized Ocean Drive is a beautiful idea but the reality is that the open streets turned the street into an open air party and mob gathering area.

They need to actually design and build a pedestrianized area instead of throwing cones up on a preexisting road. Get rid of the curbs, the street signs, the street lights, the asphalt, and bring on the landscaping and dedicated walkways.

I would take the noise from the cars that comes with open lanes, over noise from the cars and delinquents creeping into our neighborhoods.
