Miami Beach Working On New Plan For 800 Room Convention Center Hotel

Miami Beach planners continue to study the possibility of an 800-room convention center hotel.

The new site plan study obtained by TNM calls for the Jackie Gleason Theater to be demolished and rebuilt as part of the hotel project. That would allow for a shorter hotel tower, which some city residents have demanded.

A Blue Ribbon steering committee reviewed the plan earlier this month, and was in favor 5-1, according to Miami Today. The lone opponent cited a “Save the Fillmore” Facebook page.

In March, 54% of voters backed a plan to build the hotel despite a negative advertising campaign backed by the owners of the Fontainebleau. The Fontainebleau also pushed to require a 60% supermajority of voters to approve the hotel.
