Miami-Dade Metrobus Ridership Surpasses 2019 Levels

Metrobus ridership in Miami-Dade was significantly higher in June of this year than it was in the same month in 2019, according to Better Streets Miami Beach.

The newly released County Ridership Report shows that there were 19.9% more Metrobus riders in June 2023, compared to June 2019.

Metrorail ridership for the month was 31.1% below June 2019 levels. There were signs of recovery though compared to last year, with a 9.4% gain over June 2022 numbers.

Metromover is recovering faster than Metrorail, and is closing in on pre-pandemic numbers, the report shows. From June 2022 to June 2023 alone, Metromover ridership was up 32.5%.

but metro and rail is up so…. seems plausible that people are resorting to a much less desirable mode of transportion, especially as there’s more competition in the market for transport (aka, rideshare apps).

Except Metromover has half the capacity of a bus and breaks down more than stopping at red lights. Metrorail all the way, or streetcars with smart signalization.

Metromover uses the same technology as Vancouver skytrain (subway) system. Build around also in the early 80’s, except now that system has many lines and travels very fast. In fact it’s faster than metrorail. The thing is in Miami it has too many sharp turns, but if they expand it to Design District in a straight line than all it needs is just upgraded computer system to let it go faster.. and of course upgraded trains. They can just copy Vancouver upgrades and trains

In most cities the client is the taxpayer, so they build infrastructure to stimulate economic growth. In Miami the client is money storage. People who buy property and spend 2 weeks in it a year. They love overpriced restaurants and beach clubs, they don’t care about transit.

As the urban core continues to grow, so will transit ridership. I think bus ridership would be even higher if we had more covered bus stops. With Miami’s climate, especially in summer, a simple bench isn’t going to cut it.

No, it was designed to serve a concentrated area of Greater Downtown Miami. The only expansion was a dud in an attempt to save the Omni Mall, and any further expansions would defeat the whole purpose of a peoplemover.

Metrorail recovery would require a return to full time in-office work for government workers. They make up a pretty significant % of metrorail users (middle class, often live in the burbs). In general, the kinds of workers who would take metrorail to work are those who work from home a few days a week (at least) post-covid. Metrobus riders tend to be poorer service workers who don’t have options.

For example someone used to work at the office 5 days a week and took the metrorail, now they work at home 2 days a week. That is a 40% reduction in metrorail usage for that person.

There is express bus route 836 and 837 that runs express from the western suburbs to downtown during rush hours. Both those routes should have trips that go to South Beach, Mt. Sinai, and maybe Fountainblue

No, to lose more ridership than any transit system in the country way way prior to Covid is definitely not because of Uber lol.. The mismanagement of that agency was of biblical proportions. They couldn’t even afford to keep the transit department. It’s now handled though the Public Works department. Feds aren’t giving money anymore cause it’s so bad. This article is spam. The ridership is one of the lowest in the country. They just wasted more for this Better Bus project by a private consulting which ended up being scrambled at the point when they deleted many routes. Now they present it as an improvement lol.. It very bad, somehow Sobe will get 3 airport bus routes and nothing to the north or east at all. They also planned to speed up routes bus consolidating stops, and that’s not happening either.

There are times when I get out of work at 6am and the bus that arrives looks like a sardine can. Standing room only and at the front of the bus. Despite it being full the driver will always stop at every stop even if no one is getting off which adds to the already stuffed bus ride. I understand the drivers thought process but they also need to read the room or lack thereof in this case. There are always loads of people at the stops past mine which tells me the previous buses were late or didn’t show up at all. A quick remedy would be to ease the frequency on lower passenger less busy routes and use those drivers for the more frequented ones.
