Miami-Dade’s Under-Construction Courthouse Tower Seen From The West

Photos by Phillip Pessar show the under-construction Miami-Dade Civil Courthouse as seen from the Miami-Dade Cultural Center.

The photos show the tower’s western facade, which is getting glazing that is below county zoning requirements.

The courthouse tower is planned to rise 25 stories, or 474 feet above ground.

A private developer is building the courthouse in exchange for payment from the county.

HOK is the architect.

Courthouse or Prison? The minimized glazing on this is horrendous…

The irregular windows make it look like a prison or new county jail.

I thought the exact same thing . Maybe those are jail cells indeed!

The amount of block wall looks horrific

Good lord that Plaza is hideous. Metrocenter can’t come soon enough.

The Philip Johnson buildings are still better than this hellspace in the making looming over it. Instead of tearing it down for another box(es) with clusterf**k window patterns, how about making it better at street level, and redoing the plaza by filling in the space with more buildings of taste, shade trees, outdoor restaurants, etc.?

Exactly all the plaza really needed was a substantial amount of shade trees with possibly a fountain in the middle and a restaurant or cafe and this place could have been an oasis in the middle of the city. Although I do with the original design was more med revival. I guess too late for that now though… better to start from scratch

Looks to be topping off soon…can’t wait for the museum building to go so this part of the city can start from scratch

The new courthouse was an opportunity to start over and they blew it worse than Government Center.

The government center isn’t that bad. It’s original and the Brutalist design is no comparison to the irregular mess that is the courthouse

That courtyard is currently part of Miami Public Library, unfortunately.

Design would have been OK only if this side of the building was immediately abutting another (taller) building. Whoever “approved” the exterior architectural plans of this building did the city a great disservice.

Don’t mind it at all. Will look great once it’s clad.

There’s no cladding. Stucco and minimal glazing. This building is terrible, on par with Melo’s rental trash.

Ugly architecture, it’s a shame because it doesn’t have to be.

Sad, but true compared to this, and the truth hurts.

Agreed! Both the county courthouse built a couple years ago and the renderings for the new federal courthouse are really nice! I do really like miamis federal courthouse the best though

Great subsidy for Downtown landowners, terrible crowded location with no accessible parking or reasonably priced amenities. Obviously, with no remodeling foresight in mind. Another elevator nightmare at the usual hours. No place to eat, etc. The people of Miami Dade are not in the plans. What a disaster.

It’s centrally located to MDC’s population. There’s 3 public parking garages within a couple blocks, and bag a lunch.
