Miami Design District’s Unique Architecture, Under Construction (Photos)

Miami’s Design District is home to some of the most unusual construction projects in the world:

a parking garage and retail structure, designed by multiple architects:

a chad oppenheim retail structure is being built across the street:

the ICA museum, and another retail building, are also under construction:

I love the new designs
Finally, we are getting creative on this side of the bay. My only contribution and critique would be that a 2 story building seems short for the area. Nothing short of 4 or 5 stories should be considered. If parking lots are 5 stories high, the commercial/retail/resi structures should be equal or taller.

Now if only they had hotels and residential to liven up the streets, this would become a mecca for design lovers. Right now it looks like a ghost town most of the time.

There are about 5 hotels planned within 3 blocks away from Design District. There is not need for any other hotel in Miami.

So when TNM reported that the NBA said Miami doesn’t have enough hotel rooms to host the NBA All Star Game, that’s just a bunch of hokum?

Miami doesn’t have enough hotel rooms to host the NBA All Star AND Boat Show in the same weekend

But that person above said “There is not need for any other hotel in Miami.”

That’s why I asked this person if what the NBA said is BS to him/her?

It definitely needs something to liven up the area. Why shouldn’t residential or hotel be incorporated in the mix?
I agree, it looks like a ghost town. I think outdoor cafes can also liven up the area.

I agree with you,but CHANGE is coming soon.Once we build massive public transportation, and move people, tourists, guests
easy around, this place will be booming.

I can’t wait until it’s all complete.. right now it’s a construction zone.. hence little foot traffic.

Im not sold on the “multiple architect” design, which I think one of the architects is K+R.however since it only houses cars who cares, but really looks schizophrenic. considering miami traffic and car culture perhaps schizophrenic is a good metaphor.

The very literal “curtain wall” thingy is kind of cool.
