Miami Area Now Has Two Top 20 Airports

There are now two airports in the Miami metro area ranked among the top 20 in the U.S by passenger count.

New York is the only other metropolitan area with two airports in the top 20.

The milestone was reached thanks to another strong year of growth at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. In 2017, passenger count at FLL was 32.5M, up 11.3% from 2016. For the year, the airport ranked as the 19th busiest nationwide, ahead of LaGuardia and Philadelphia.

MIA, which broke a record in 2016, had 44M passengers for the year, down 1.15% from the previous year.

Both airports achieved their top 20 ranking despite Hurricane Irma, which caused a sharp drop in passenger count during September.

Strong growth is expected again this year at FLL, with projected seat count up 8.5% for the first six months of the year.

South Florida winning

Flymia

FLL has had impressive growth. It is a true second gateway to Miami metro these days. Non-stops to Europe, the Middle East and Deep South America.

I just hope they continue to expand and renovate because the airport is a disaster.

And it is so outdated as to getting around the airport on Shuttle buses , while Florida other 3 hub Airports (Mia, Orlando, and Tampa) have a people-mover system to get passengers around there airport.. Step up Fort Lauderdale Airport..

Please read the article again.

in his defense, it is a confusingly written article. should be edited to be more clear about what they mean.

marc

How is it confusing? The article is about South Florida having two airports in the top 20. Where is there anything about it being the busiest?

The headline should read “Miami And NY Now The Only Two Metros With Two Top 20 Airports”

Anonymous

Okay look, the article states – “There are now two airports in the Miami area ranked among the top 20 for passengers in the U.S., thanks to another strong year of growth at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

New York is the only other metropolitan area with two airports in the top 20 by passenger count.”

What’s confusing about that? It’s saying that between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, this metro area (as conceived it being called and should be) have two airports that rank in the top 20 airports in the United States for passengers. The only other metro area that can say this NYC.

Why is that so confusing to understand?

The headline was updated since the above was posted. It is an anon comment thread – everyone complains about everything!

As my dad in Texas says, ” they’d complain if you hung ’em with a new rope.”

Dunlap

So correct about nothing being confused about the two South Florida airports ranking in the top 20..

Most commenters here like to pretend everything above the Dade County line doesn’t exist when talking about South Florida. It’s quite sad, but funny.

Correctly said.. Broward County/Ft.Lauderdale is approaching 2 million residents…No more needs to be said..

Anonymous

Same goes for Broward residents with respect to Miami. Isn’t it a common joke that a passport is needed to cross the County line south!!!???

When in Miami is 3:00 PM in Ft. Lauderdale is 1983.
