Miami Ranks Among Safest U.S. Cities, Gallup Poll Says

A new Gallup poll shows that Americans now think of Miami as one of the safest cities in the U.S.

According to survey, 59% of Americans consider Miami a safe city to live and visit – the 5th highest ranking city, and far ahead of cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, or San Francisco.

It is the first time since Gallup conducted the survey that the majority considered Miami to be safe.

It’s also a sharp contrast from 1990, when the same Gallup survey showed just 17% of Americans thought Miami was safe. It’s even a big jump from 2006, when just 38% thought Miami was safe.

Miami was also one of just five cities enjoying bipartisan support, with the majority of both Democrats and Republicans considering the city to be safe. Miami and Dallas were the only two U.S. cities that saw support from members of both parties at roughly equal levels ( 61% of Democrats and 58% of Republicans consider Miami safe).

Aside from the recklessness of Miami’s drivers, I do believe it is a generally safe city.

I Love Miami

We can easily curb them with new road signals and configurations, continuous investment in pedestrian areas and amenities, breeze channeling, and mix of canopies and palms to add shade. I love how safe Miami is in general, and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else!

I really hate this mentality. Can you imagine if the gringos said that during the 1960’s when half a million Cubans immigrated here? Of course not – they welcomed them with open arms.

Build Miami

That’s entirely not true, there are many videos of the “gringos” saying they wished the Cubans got on a boat and went back. There were signs on rentals that said “no pets, no Cubans” in the 1960s and 70s. I wouldn’t call that welcomed with open arms at first. Eventually of course they helped make Miami great and are a large reason it is what it is today but at first they weren’t always welcomed.

Anon

You’re taking isolated incidents and applying them to the whole. This city is 70% Latino. I think it’s safe to say they were welcomed into the fold.

Please resd, “The Sins of South Beach” by Mayor Dowd.
Or, learn the history of how Pres. Jimmy Carter “welcomed” all Cubans.
Fidel emptied the jails and insane asylums and floated the worst of the worst to Florida’s shores.
Many settled in South Beach, and many settled under the overpasses a la the opening scene from Scarface.

Anonymous

They were “welcomed” under the guise they would go back after an exploding cigar took Castro out, hence why they never assimilated and more Latinos latched on.

Exactly, we are a welcoming city. Anyone who thinks this is a city where we turn our back on one another needs to consider going somewhere else where they can live in solitude not among our incredibly rich and vibrant diverse city from around the globe!

Lies. New York City is one of the safest cities in the USA and much safer than Miami. You can easily google crime statistics and look for yourself.

Anonymous

I don’t think crime statistics capture it in an age where so many laws are not being enforced. I spend time in both cities, and have yet to see the signs of unenforced laws in Miami that are now routine in New York. Shoplifting and open-air drug use are epidemic in Manhattan. I’m not even counting the new red-light districts springing up in Queens and populated by trafficked women fresh over the Rio Grande.

I just flew in from NYC this afternoon. The mentally insane were all over Midtown and in Columbus Circle.
It was shocking.
You never see anything like that in Miami.

Sure, in a City with 7million, a dozen people being thrown off subway platforms is a small percentage statistically, but those events take place in some of the best neighborhoods.

Anonymous

I think it’s important to consider the actual question asked in the poll for those that didn’t click the link:

“Now thinking about some large cities, both those you have visited and those you have never visited, from what you know and have read, do you consider each of the following cities to be safe to live in or visit, or not?”

This poll isn’t specifically asking how safe people that have recently been to or live in the list of cities feel. They’re including answers from people that have never been to some of the cities included.

For what it’s worth I feel very safe in Miami and don’t mean for this to detract from it’s place on this list – but the poll isn’t indicative of any real crime statistics. It’s in part a reflection of which places have received the most negative media attention in the past few years. I’m sure the positive sentiment though will continue to bring tourism/investment into Miami though which is great!

Anonymous

Rivera Beach and Lauderhill are more dangerous respectively, too.

deyonce

No offense but Riviera Beach is a total separate area that we just avoid, it’s okay to have bad areas, we just drive around them until they get better. At least we don’t let them cause too much trouble in the nicer areas or they will get ‘em selves in jail where they belong, not like NYC where the good folks get to live in prison while that bad ones run amuck.

Anon

Lauderhill is not that dangerous

Anonymous

This is based off public perception which isn’t always a great proxy for actual statistics. I would still based on actual stats Miami is one of the more dangerous cities but it is light years ahead of where it was even 10-15 years ago and that perception is trickling down to the general public. South Florida even as of 2010 had the highest crime rate of the ten largest metros but I’m pretty sure that’s not the case anymore.

I’ve been to most the cities on this list since 2020 and Miami does feel different than a lot of them. Chicago, LA, NY, SF all feel empty in their cores and that really highlights the crazies. I also think that crime rates themselves aren’t even a great proxy when many of these cities have DAs and SAOs determined not to prosecute cases. If the police know thefts won’t get prosecuted why even report them. Or robberies or burglaries.

Yeppers

It’s easy to take Miami for granted until you’ve been to sh*thole communist cities like SF and you see how bad things can get.

Still below Las Vegas, notorious for organized crime and Seattle, where neighborhoods were literally blocked off and became lawless three years ago and police are quitting like dropping flies. Boston wouldn’t have ranked so high if it wasn’t for the perception of location near prestigious schools.

There’s a guy here who always writes “Miami victory” for new building launches. That, yes, is a great victory for Miami. Everyone has to gain in a city that gives its residents and visitors a sense of security. Real estate appreciates, hotels and restaurants move, retail sells more, producing business opportunities, belief, employment and taxes.

Although this is true it’s important to take into account that most respondents aren’t thinking of actual boarders of Miami city and instead are just thinking of downtown / brickell. Considering I’ve seen women walking home from the club at 2am by themselves in brickell it’s very striking compared to a lot of other cities right now.

Based on these replies, people really do get mad about the crime in Miami lol. No matter what facts you bring to the table.

The truth is Miami might seem safe because its a very segregated city, so most miami residents are clueless on how bad it really is in other parts. There are tons of violent crimes on a daily basis in Allapatah, Hialeah, Gladview, Opa-Locka, Miami Gardens, etc. And that’s where a huge portion of Miami residents live. A very select amount of people live in Brickell and Coconut Grove lol
