MIA’s First Asia Flight Probably Won’t Come From American Airlines

American Airlines is the biggest carrier at Miami International Airport, but they aren’t interested in adding a flight to Asia in the near future.

A spokesman recently said that American prefers to focus on adding flights to Asia from Dallas and Los Angeles “for a variety of reasons, including geography and demand.”

Local business leaders and MIA officers have established a MIA Asia Task Force, and are meeting with airlines in Asia to push for the service. A trip to China is scheduled for April 11-23.

In addition to American Airlines,  the task force is targeting Japan Airlines, China Airlines, Asiana Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Cathay Pacific, Air China, Korean Air, EVA Air and Hainan Airlines.

The Asian city with the highest demand to and from Miami is Manilla, Phillipines, but the route is not considered viable for economic and technical reasons.

A direct flight to Asia would help Miami.

Would much prefer traveling on an Asian carrier than AA. Let’s get this route launced!

totally agree – i always use my AA frequent flier miles on cathay pacific instead of american when going to hong kong or bangkok… service/experience is much better. i hope they get a flight to hong kong first instead of japan – but any service to asia would be great.

Right now Qatar is the airline used to get back to Manila. Maybe Etihad should step in/Emirates to add competition

I think Etihad will come first since Emirates is in Orlando.

That is a pretty dense looking city in that rendering.

So the city with the highest demand isn’t viable, yet cities with less demand are? That makes no sense.

High percentages of cruise ship employees are from the Philippines, that’s why Manila is the city with highest demand. However, these workers are given only 1-2 vacation periods a year and the cost of a direct Miami-Manila flight would probably be fairly expensive. Not to mention that technical reasons like distance and aircraft weight could be prohibitive.
