New Renderings Of Broward Elevated Light Rail That Could Eventually Reach Sawgrass

The Sun Sentinel has published new renderings of a people mover system and an elevated light rail system to be built in Broward County.

The light rail system is planned to be elevated. It will run 3.5 miles in a first phase, from an intermodal center at Fort Lauderdale airport to the Broward County Convention Center and Port Everglades. Eventually, it could be extended to Sawgrass Mills.

Completion of the light rail’s first phase is planned in 2028.

Fort Lauderdale Airport is also planned to get a 2.1 mile people mover system, connecting from the intermodal center.

Completion of the airport people mover system is planned in 2030.

A Brightline stop is also being considered at the Fort Lauderdale Airport intermodal center.

Maybe you all can start actually start attending the transportation board meetings with the Broward MPO to get your ideas heard. The same applies to Miami-Dade. Transit is a very hot-button topic that everyone complains about but rarely takes part in finding solutions. I go to the meetings all the time, and no one from our group ever comes

Why can’t we live comment on these meetings online? Nobody has time to sit in traffic to go to these or pay the high parking fees.

Nice! Hopefully it doesn’t get killed by NIMBY’s again

I remember “the Wave” streetcar with 13 stations and a $150 million price tag approved in 2013.
I also remember the Elon Musk tunnels going all over Ft Lauderdale. Plans were done about 3 years ago.

As for tunnels, Vegas proved to be a more receptive proving ground. As they perfect their boring machines and fully automate the process, we should eventually see them in our area.
Check out Joe Tegtmeyer’s YouTube video on the tunneling at GigaTexas.

Elons tunnel transport system is a glorified underground cramped highway with terrible design that is a fire hazard. I cannot believe people actually think a bunch of Teslas underground are going to resolve traffic. AdamSomething did an awesome take on this project and the sheer stupidity of Musk to even consider building tunnels in a limestone built place like Florida 🤡

Totally agree. Musk was a snake oil salesman with his hole tunneling system. We stopped hearing about Hyperloop, because it is mostly sci-fi. Not a real solution

Wish Miami-Dade at least gave the metromover a two mile extension up North Miami Ave, not asking for much just two miles to connect wynwood and maybe midtown

Anonymous

“According to the county’s most recent estimates, the cost of each additional mile of Metrorail tracks would be $150 million.”

Anon

Those numbers are coming from the people that dont want to build it.

The metromover is probably less than that

our politicians are a bunch of clowns who do not care for the residents. But no one shows up to vote so really its on the voters at this point

Doesn’t help when the flip side of the coin are Portland-tier Blue loons.

Vote one party out in one election. Then vote the other party out in the next election. The point is – if you keep voting people out, then they will pay attention. And eventually, one set of these clowns will do something right. Need to make these people scared. They just sit around like Joe Carroll because no one votes.

I think we need term limits and rules on bouncing around from office to office. Both sides start looking like a uni party the more they stay in office.

Tri-rail will build a station at midtown when Brightline opens up the commuter line. And thier will more staions up the Brightline tracks to WPB.

The MetroMover (Omni Loop) elevated ends right where NW 15th street dead ends (down past the School Board station). It’s next to the FEC/Brightline tracks and eventual Tri-rail NE corridor commuter line will run. Seems like a perfect place for a Tri-rail NEC station, you could get off and go up to the MetroMover. There is room to build both stations there too.

Casey

A brightline stop at FLL is a must.

Anonymous

It’ll never happen but you might get a Tri-rail NEC station at FLL>

Hopefully they consider it to be a proper metro system and not some gadgetbahn that goes 20mph

This is welcome, but why can’t Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties create a real regional transit system that provides Metrorail elevated light rail all over the metro area? Like LA or Atlanta or DC or even SF? We’re going to wind up with a Frankenstein system that’s doomed to fail because none of it will be seamless.

Because mass transportation is “liberal ideology”

Go to Europe & other countries like India, China to see how efficiently public transport system work. US is heavily dependent on cars which is the main cause of traffic congestion & heavy expenditure on road building. Integrated Rail, metro, buses & waterways is crucial for mass public transport. The trolley, local buses are running empty & wasting taxpayer money. South florida is worst.

This would be a big leg up for Ft Lauderdale and Port Everglades with direct and easy access to FLL. Congrats FtL!

Anything to relieve congestion should be built right now, especially since 95 around the FLL is the deadliest highway in Florida!

Correction, all of America.

anonymous

This would be a huge development for all of South Florida. If North east Corridor connects all the way to FTL airport this would connect a large portion of both counties

Hopefully, there will be a stop at Hardrock Casino.

There should be a line connecting trirail/amtrack/95 express buses to the current Broghtlone station and from there to FLL and the port.

It’s called Uber and Lyft.

Wasn’t the 595 reconstruction supposed to be built with the ability to add a mass transit line?

Henry

Why doesn’t South Florida have a regional public transportation system that integrates buses and rail in all 3 counties, or even just Broward and Miami-Dade? MARTA in Atlanta, DART in Dallas, and BART in the Bay Area are just some examples of public transportation systems that incorporate the whole region and not just one city or county. South Florida needs to level up ASAP!!

anonymous

we do have one. Technically the South Florida Transportation Authority oversees the Trirail which connects 3 counties. However, Metrorrail is handled by Miami Dade and Metromover is within City of Miami

Anon

Because south Florida is a glorified third world metro area that lacks basic infrastructure.

Anonymous

I am happy to see this too and want better infrastructure. However, obviously, you have never been to a third world country.

South Florida is really not that bad. Go live in London or Toronto and see how happy you will be with there traffic issues.

Jay Ell

Huh?? London or Toronto? Both those cities have superb, comprehensive multimodal transit systems, unlike Boward and South Florida.

Anon

At least London and Toronto have decent mass transit that isn’t the palmetto which is basically a speedway of third world drivers

Anonymous too

You can experience a third world transit system here in FL, just go to Tampa or Jacksonville.

Anonymous

We do have one; SFTA. You must be confusing us with Tampa who has the worst transit in FL. Every county there has their own bus system, and Buses don’t cross county lines. No rail at all (except for a tourist trolley). You should feel lucky that we have what we have!

President Reagan once said for the cost of the Miami Metro Transit system, everyone in Miami could’ve had their own limousine!!

Anonymous

For the cost overruns and pocketed money that was supposed to go to extensions, everyone in Miami today would have yachts and leerjets, too.

Reagan was outraged by the cost of Metrorail at the time which was $1 Billion dollars. Imagine trying to build a 22 Mile Heavy Rail system for that amount today!

Don

The smartest move would be to put transit under or above federal. The Tri Rail already serves North South adjacent to I95. Utilization is relatively low during most hours. Huge amounts of traffic could be removed if an efficient system was run from Boca to FLL then South to North Dade.

Jay Ell

If this is fully-grade separated vis elevation then Broward County needs to commit to this system being automated light metro to significantly reduce operating costs.

If this is fully-grade separated via elevation then Broward County needs to commit to this system being automated light metro to significantly reduce operating costs. So proud to see this kind of thinking and visioning going on in Broward but it needs to be followed through.
