Newly Passed $1.2T Infrastructure Bill Could Go To Metrorail Expansion

President Biden signed a $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill into law earlier this week.

Some of the funding could end up in Miami for transit expansion, including building part of the SMART transit plan, according to Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava.

The mayor told the Miami Herald’s Doug Hanks that the county’s leading candidates for the funding requests include:

  • Septic-to-sewer conversions
  • Sea-level-rise projects
  • Bear Cut and Venetian Causeway bridge replacement
  • Rapid transit buses along the 836 expressway
  • SMART Plan’s North Corridor, where multiple firms are competing to build elevated rail

Levine-Cava also said that asking for funding for the Beach Corridor is a possibility. A monorail system is in the final stages of planning.

Amtrak has also said it is considering expansion in the wake of the funding bill, including service from Miami to Orlando.

Florida is set to get billions in funding over the next five years.

Here’s a fact sheet from the White House on how those funds are expected to be allocated in Florida. The breakdown shows how much will be given to water, bridge, and transit projects, among other uses:

Right, because then it TOTALLY will pay for itself so you can ride a shortbus on its own bridge for free to get your overpriced avocado toast and crapft beer in Wynwood.

MetroRAIL*** Miami deserves a fully synchronized heavy-rail network that services every part of the county. To live, work, and play in a functional world-class city competitive with other metros in the US, residents should be able to access any of the economic hubs on *ONE* train system. Miami Beach, Wynwood, Midtown, FIU, Coral Gables, and other communities throughout south FL booming with development have been neglected by reliable transit for too long.

Look, I’m no Biden stan, but you got to give credit where credit is due. Multiple presidents (including, especially, Trump who “knows more about infrastructure than anyone else”) have promised infrastructure with no results. Biden has been pushing this since he came into office. You can continue your LGB chant all you want, that doesn’t change the fact that this was a historic achievement.

I just see all the hypocrisy from LeBron.

What? Plenty of bills have been signed for infrastructure by both Democrats and Republicans, not to mention pork barrel projects in unrelated legislation. This bill will do absolutely nothing, and if such bipartisanship was the other way around, Peloshit would be calling it “Frankenstein(‘s Monster).”

historic? why is this infrastructure plan historic? bush and obama did not promise any infrastructure, at that time us infrastructure was n’t that bad so it was n’t a priority. trump’s infrastructure plan was for his second term but he was n’t re-elected so he could n’t do it. i don’t buy your story that joe biden is the savior of the us infrastructure, the infrastructure plan was going to happen with biden or trump in the white house,

Anonymous

Oh please. Trump promised everything (including the release of his tax records, the funding of the Great Wall from Mexico, and on and on) because his supporters will believe LITERALLY ANYTHING that comes out of his mouth. Your claim that this would’ve happened anyway because Trump “had a plan to do it” doesn’t hold water.

LMAO. With the commissioners that Dade has, this money will be allocated to more buses and expanding the highways by adding more lanes. This conversation is decades old and as a South Florida native, it’s incredibly hard to believe that any rail expansion will ever take place and get passed the planning stage. There has been infinite planning studies of how to get this train moving (yes, pun intended) only for it to always come to a screeching halt. I mean, we are in 2021! I’m only as hopeful as ever as I am always disappointed, but I would never get my hopes β€œup” until I see shovels in the dirt and columns being constructed. Otherwise this money will be more busses and more SunPass express lanes.

The rest of the world that matters doesn’t have a joke of a government-subsidized inter-city service like Amtrak. Japan and the UK privatized their railways for a reason. France want to as well, except every time that it’s brought up gives the unions an excuse for a “peaceful protest.”

You’re right about that. Nuclear is the only scalable baseload technology that isn’t coal or natural gas. Solar and Wind are not baseload technologies and are always accompanied in their deployment by natural gas generators to cover for their significant downtime. Unless we deploy nuclear, all those EVs will wind up being extremely expensive and impractical.

BRT and a Metrorail expansion through the county’s most unwalkable areas. No extension from Miami Airport to Douglas Road, no east-west connection to FIU, no Tri-Rail extension using existing track into Kendall, and no fixing the Miami Airport Station, which the old man touted as VP while under construction, to allow his beloved Amtrak to actually fit. SAD!
