Board Denies Extension For Graffiti-Covered 19-Story Downtown Miami Building

Miami’s Code Enforcement Board voted to deny an extension for a 19-story building in downtown Miami to clean up graffiti, according to NBC 6.

The building is slated for demolition, to make way for a supertall tower called One Bayfront Plaza.

Interior demolition on the old building began in May 2023.

In early December 2023, the building was painted over in graffiti.

Commissioner Joe Carollo claimed the owners aren’t moving fast enough.

“This is a joke. How could you get away with something like this in a major city like Miami?” Carollo asked.

In a press conference, Carollo said he wanted the building painted over before New Years Eve celebrations

Joe Carollo is the joke.. He has done for the DT community! He is only worried about his NY Eve celebration….Meanwhile, he was elected in 2017 and did nothing to repair the Bayfront fountain until this year.

What about instead of waisting money covering that cr@p with paint, in a building next to be demolished, put those “artists” that violate the law and destroy private property, so they learn to respect the laws!

The why try to fix something, better prevent this to happen by enforcing the law!
If they want to be artists, then get a canvas and paid for it!!

I bet that if one of those creative artists fell from a balcony while damaging a building, they will be the first ones to take legal actions and a shark lawyer against the building’s owner!.

Actually if I’m not mistaken the artists were encouraged to use this bldg as a canvas last year for art basel

These comments all getting thumbs down is so sad, like why do yall hate facts so much. Literally it was part of art Basel and it’s a fact. Then yall wanna cite this as a statistic in the rise of crime you see when it isn’t even crime smh

This isn’t art; it’s essentially tags or advertisements for individuals.

We have rules regarding self-promotion in prominent spaces…While it may possess artistic qualities, its primary purpose seems to be promoting individual names.

The City of Miami’s Code of Ordinances includes provisions addressing unauthorized postings and advertisements. These regulations maintain the city’s aesthetic and prevent visual clutter.

maybe you are right, they were ok by the city, but what it’s statistically real is the raise in crime! and is not right wind rhetoric…. and don’t use the statistics of the country as a whole, but concentrate in the numbers of major urban cities where the crime is up 30% especially in your favorite color!! So he wants to waste money and resources on a building that’s in the process of being demolished? How about you get the owners to speed up the demolition process instead..

Why are spending money to paint a building to be demolished? Moronic politician

Anon

Bc it’s still there, and paint may help bring value or potential that is unrealized, which saves money.

if you think graffiti on a building being demolished in the middle of downtown is negatively affecting it’s value…then you must also believe tariffs won’t cause inflation

Graffiti does not appear to fall under the category of art, as it is specifically defined differently in the Miami Code.

It cannot be considered art because it is primarily functional in nature—basically an advertisement for self-promotion—rather and any creative expression seems to come secondary. It is like a signature or logo.

I would call it art if it were a mural or an image that served a meaningful purpose for the community as a whole, rather than just displaying the names of people.

They may buff the graffiti, sure. This will only create a blank canvas for the same graffiti artists to strike again. Save everyone the time and money.

Wow I actually agree with Joe Carollo for once. How did our city allow this trashy graffiti to happen and not hold the “artists” responsible?

Build something iconic. Like the shard in London or one Vanderbilt in nyc. The building that goes up on that site it’s going to represent the Miami city skyline. It must a beautiful and iconic structure like the two I just mentioned. I hope they. Don’t built something boring

I rather see the graffiti old building than a chain link fence around an empty lot for another generation before anything is built there.

Except an abandoned, graffiti-scarred building is a crime magnet, and decimates surrounding property values.

He has secured significant funding for new developments along SW 2nd Avenue in Brickell (name TBD), which is rapidly becoming one of Miami’s most innovative and fast-growing areas for economic and real estate development.

Would his district in Miami benefit from more attention and better PR and marketing? Absolutely. Connecting the Brickell part of his district to the new improvements in Riverside and Little Havana is essential, and while progress is underway, some of his efforts may not yet be visible as they are actively taking shape.
