Passenger traffic between Miami International Airport and Europe increased by 31.6% between 2010 and 2013, despite the continent’s weak economy.
In 2010, 2,377,318 passengers flew to or from Europe from MIA. By 2013, that number had increased to 3,119,886. In the most recent quarter, the airport averaged 130 non-stop flights per week, compared to 92 during the same period in 2010. The statistics were provided by the airport and were first published in Miami Today.
That number will likely increase in 2014, as MIA adds even more flights to Europe. Finnair, Air Europa, Lufthansa and American Airlines are among the carriers that have added or plan to increase flights.
Aviation director Emilio Gonzalez intends to meet with Finnair leadership to discuss the possibility of further expanding service.
