This is where Einstein Bros. Bagels will be opening at Overtown’s 3 MiamiCentral project.

The franchise is being operated by the Miami Heat’s Udonis Haslem, who will also be opening a Starbucks at MiamiCentral.

Call me elitist, but can’t we just call this area downtown?

Apparently 6 blocks is considered “over” town…

You’re not an elitist, just insensitive to the areas hostory. Overtown is older than the city of Miami and there’s 3 churches open today that are older than the city of Miami. It’s where black people had to live. Today it remains a black community. Tomorrow it will remain a black community. It is not downtown.

I don’t consider it Overtown until you get west of 95 or north of 8th St. Maybe that Poinciana Village condo building on 7th, too.

There used to be a lot more Overtown. It was bulldozed to build I95/395

Lets just call it Miami.. the Overtown neighborhood

And you are an officially certified Miami historian, correct?

Very few original residents live in Overtown east of I-95. It cut the neighborhood in half, black flight to Liberty City and later Miami Gardens, and incremental demolition of blighted properties made it a wasteland until about ten years ago.

Still, I don’t mind calling it Overtown because it doesn’t really have a racial connotation like “Colored” or “Buck” Town. I’m all for the actual names, like “Overtown” and “Park West.” Also, “Southside” instead of “West Brickell,” “Lemon City” and “Little River” instead of “Little Haiti,” and “Riverside” instead of “Little Havana,” because the namesake residents haven’t been the majority in over a decade. We don’t call “Wynwood” “Little San Juan” anymore, right?

Bleh, but hopefully this means more fast casual restaurant chains will come to the downtown area, like Five Guys and of course Chipotle.

how about less chain restaurants and more real restaurants.

I like to see both, but “real” restaurants tend to have high turnover, and gets annoying when places you find and like close.

Einstein’s Bagels used to be good.
They stopped serving butter. It’s a shame.
Now when you ask for a bagel with butter, you get plastic margarine. I even tried to request butter and was told it’s been replaced with margarine

Overtown will become a white community or mix. Its crime and project housing is disapearing very quickly with all these new developement which makes it a better place to live. I think the housing projects needs to be eliminated, its just a failure here in America.

Looks like UD is trying not to become another broke post-NBA player like Allen Iverson/Dennis Rodman/Scottie Pippen….good for him.
