Ok, so here are my 2 cents. I was off yesterday and since my plans to go to the zoo folded due to Gordon I decided to take a ride and check out Miami Central. The last time I drove by this area there was a lot of trash on the sidewalk right next to some half completed abandoned building, that building is still there but now right in front of it sits this new station. Everything feels new and there was no trash around anywhere. I went inside and since I am from NYC I expected to see something at least a little bit like Grand Central Station, but that was not the case. It is nice no doubt, brand new, clean, Joe and the Juice looks great, the food court was completely blocked off so I could not see in, but other than that it felt very small. No bigger than a regular train station in the North East. Even smaller than the Crystal City Metro Station in Washington DC. Difficult to say if it will be enough space for everyone who will be taking the train years from now, I guess only time will tell. The surrounding… Read more »

Totally different concept and scenario. Grand Central Station was built as an International Train Station, meaning, it was built to receive trains from multiple states. Brightline is purely a Florida concept, meaning, it’s being built to service only the state of Florida, therefore there’s no need to build a train station in Miami as big as NYC’s Grand Central Station or the one in DC.

Different states are part of the United States. This station will have many more international visitors then GCS. What’s your point?

You state that as if it’s a fact. Grand Central Station is a hub for trains traveling to and from Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Connecticut, New Jersey, and other states. And don’t tell me what makes up the United States of America, I was born in Miami in 1953, that’s probably before you popped out of your mother. People travel by train from other states to go to work in NYC and on those trains are a whole lot of international visitors also. So what’s the point of your comment?

Ok first of all the word “international” means that it involves at least 2 or more nations. That is not the case not here and not in NYC, all of them are National stations. Second, the station that is mentioned up above called Crystal City in Washington DC only services the DC Metro area and it is certainly not international. However, I have been there and it is attached to a beautiful underground mall, probably twice as big as Miami Central will be.

Less than half of the station is even open at this point. What you see is not everything…. The complete south end of the station hasn’t been completed, and that will be the connections to Metromover and Metrorail, as well as Trirail also coming in. The entire complex will be in excess of a million square feet…

Thanks for clarifying that Jim.

Jim, can you elaborate on the metrorail connection. Based on what i have seen so far, I couldn’t see an obvious connection to the Overtown or Govt Center stations that would allow you to transfer without physically leaving Miami Central. Sounds like you are saying differently, which would be great and make it a true transportation hub. If not, the Overtown station is a quick walk, but all connected would be awesome.

Hope a lot of these businesses got favorable lease terms. Cause there won’t be anyone there for years.

Um, where did you by your Crystal Ball from?

Anonymous

I mean I’ve already had 2 different clients come in from out of town and tell me they used the train, to my surprise. Once we get Orlando and a city on the west coast of Florida, I think it’ll work very well.

Anonymous

I know so many people who are using the train. So not sure where you are getting that info from.

Anonymous

Who are these people? Cause I’ve seen lots of trains and they’re nearly empty.
