Photos: Solar Trees Have Been Installed At Bayfront Park In Downtown Miami

FPL installed several Solar Trees to collect solar energy at downtown Miami’s Bayfront Park last week.

The energy company is also supposed to be installing a Solar Circle, Solar Arc Canopy, in a deal approved by commissioners in July 2018. A total of seven solar trees are part of the package.

The trees and other solar equipment in the park are mostly intended to bring awareness to renewable energy.

FPL is paying just $10 for the rights to install the trees, circle and canopy in a 25 year deal.

How about we get some actual “Plant Trees” instead of solar trees along Biscayne Boulevard. That entire stretch of Biscayne Boulevard from SE 2nd to NE 11th has less than a dozen trees that actually create shade on the Eastern sidewalk. Placing these solar trees all but ensures an additional 200′ area of sidewalk will not get real trees because they would say that would block the solar.

Bayfront Park needs a cohesive redesign. It’s a wasteland of disjointed areas, many of which rarely get used due to a lack of purpose.

It’s such a beautiful park in a central location. No reason why it shouldnt be our Central Park.

and lack of shade

It’s main purpose is a venue. It is designed to be a venue. It has always been a venue. Go back and look in the 1940s. It was always a concert venue masquerading as a park. More shade, sure. Get rid of the broken fountain? Absolutely. Redesign? No.

Whatever happened to the “Solar Ring” @ Bayfront? a TNM post from 7/30/18 said it was approved by the City Commission, but there hasn’t been any update since.

These Solar Trees were part of the same proposal–should we expect the Solar Ring installation to begin soon? It would bring much needed shade & cover to the Amphitheater.

A similar Shade Structure (sans solar) is currently being installed at the North Beach Bandshell.

They said it will be installed by the time the Super Bowl comes around. I’m assuming it’s very close.

This is stupid in so many ways. These stupid solar trees are a program by FPL where customers opt-in ($9 added to their monthly bill) and they basically pay for the “trees”. In return, FPL gets the benefit, visibility and PR and branding on public places.(PAMM, Museum Park, Bayside, Amphitheater). While the trees look modern today, Im’ not sure that is going to be the case the next remaining 25 years of this sweetheart park branding deal. Commissioners, please stop trying to sell out our parks, and while you are at it please make sure that you relocate the hundreds of sketchy homeless that sleep on the park at night and harass our residents, the park visitors, and tourists.

and let’s pull the scooters from bayfront park so residents don’t have to “move over” while walking their pets.

I’ll give them a month until etched with graffiti by subhuman trash and sprayed with homeless and dog urine.

Those are solar trees! Once they are fully grown they will outgrown the green trees. Duh!! 😉

As long as it looks good. Functional? Who cares. Now that’s Miami.

Guys serious question. What do solar trees power? Are they for surrounding infrastructure or is it more like a cellphone charging station?

Anonymous

The trees won’t power much… each tree can power about a quarter to a half a home (but these are poorly planted and in the shade most of the time due to tall buildings in the area). The arc and circle can power more… bu’t its still a drop in the bucket to what a downtown needs. I doubt the whole thing could do more than a half a block in downtown.

Another craZy idea from park commission. The stupid things are next to sidewalk where I might expect to see grass and real trees.

Waste of taxpayers’ money.
The energy savings is ridiculous compared to the size of the city.
Put some real trees.

LOL, I wonder how much energy was required for the steel vs how much those panels will produce in their lifetime.

Does anybody know if these cause cancer?

I’ve heard from our Dear Leader that wind power causes cancer!

They only cause your skin to turn orange and your hair to turn urine yellow but I’ve heard that it only impacts your mental health. No cancer.

So LM get this straight… FPL pays $10 for a 25-year deal to OWN the energy and sell it back to us while also making it look like a promotion for renewable energy???
