Related wants to help develop a densely populated urban core that has no need for cars in the future, Perez said. The future of cities is human-scale buildings near transit that are better for the environment, he added.
The 444 Brickell property is at a key location next to the Brickell Avenue Bridge, and the development will add a continuous riverwalk connecting under the bridge from the Icon Brickell complex towards Brickell City Centre.
In 2014, Related said they was considering building a Cesar Pelli-designed project at 444 Brickell, after purchasing the property a year in late 2013.
The developer submitted plans in 2014 for a three-tower complex called One Brickell with 82, 77 and 57 stories, designed by Arquitectonica. Construction was planned to begin in 2015, with 1,400 residential units, 249 hotel units, parking, and office and retail.
Advertisements for the One Brickell proposal was placed at the site, but later removed after Related put the project on hold.
Related’s Jon Paul Perez said in an interview this month that the developer would like to develop a Cesar Pelli or Rem Koolhaas project on the waterfront in Brickell.
