Report: Miami Traffic Up 30% Since Pre-Covid Times

Traffic in Miami rose sharply last year, making the city one of the top 10 in the world for congestion, according to a new report from Inrix.

Overall, Miami traffic rose 59% between 2021 and 2022.

In 2021 Miami ranked 32nd worldwide for congestion. In 2022, Miami ranked 8th worldwide, the report said.

Miami traffic has also increased 30% from pre-Covid times.

By comparison, traffic in New York City is down 16% from pre-Covid levels.

We need to extend and improve the Metromover. Make it a pay service and make it reach all of Miami and Miami Beach!

anonymous

100% it needs to be expanded but Miami Beach wants nothing to do with a metro mover. THey’d take gridlock forever over a metromover. Also, the metromover is great now but they need to add more cars so that you move more people. The biggest way to cut congestion on the streets of miami is to expand the metro rail network and the trirail which does appear to be happening;.

Anonymous

Can’t add more cars when the stations are too short, and the cars are too small anyway. It would require a complete rebuilt, and the county has already flushed money down the train refurbishing the existing beer cans.

Metromover is a joke of a public transportation, it can only carry 5 people around every hour and costs way too much to build. Since the subway is not an option in Miami. A solid electric bus network with dedicated lanes is the only viable options

A bus? In 2023? Groundbreaking!

I took Metromover this past weekend and each train was carrying around 60 people at the time. The frequency of trains was about 10 to 15 minutes apart. The system is at least reducing hundreds of cars per day on the Downtown and Brickell area. For longer distances, Metrorail is a more efficient transportation.

Bruno

No it isn’t.
It is reducing the number of pedestrians and bus riders.

NYC Transplant

Everyone is probably embarrassed by it, but the real solution to improving circulation in the urban core is an upgrade to the trolley system. The routes are sensible and circulate people from metrorail stops, but the vehicles are insufficient in number, some have faulty transponders so they don’t show up properly on the app, and the staffing needs upgrading. If they ran every ten minutes, it would be fantastic.

You think all those people would be walking instead? Brother I’m not walking from Brickell to Downtown any time of the year.

It actually brings pedestrians in so it increases them

Anonymous

In other words, for distances beyond its current route, Metrorail is a more efficient transportation.

That’s bad. The Metromover is designed for 90 seconds or at worst 5 minute headways on the single service outer loops. Maybe even one minute headways and all two-car trains are possible.

Anonymous

The Metromover can be expanded and enhanced to have more cars and reach more areas. Taking a bus isn’t what I’d call efficient public transportation, even with dedicated lanes.

Bruno

“What I’d call effecient”

Probably because you have never done any deep thinking into the total cost to acquire the right of ways, the cost to build, and the cost to operate annually divided by the number of riders.

If you did that, you’d see that that the Metromover is extremely inefficient.

Anonymous

I disagree about buses, but you can’t argue with the Metromoverseggsuals.

anonymous

I used to ride the metromover from downtown to Brickell many years ago and you’d see the cars packed with way more than 5 people. Def agree they need to add more cars because the current layout is good it just doesnt move enough people

The Metromover Is Free, Fast, & Automated. You Do Not Get This With A Bus. If We Invested Properly In It Then Traffic Would Not Be As Bad.

Out of every public transportation tech, buses with dedicated lanes, subways, metrorail, etc… Metromover is the slowest! Can’t even imagine riding from Miami beach to downtown. The ride would take forever and really the capacity is the real problem, if we even have 10% of Miami wanting to ride it, we gonna wait an hour just to get on a mover

The trust fund Peter Pans of the world that advocate for expanding an APM designed for airports have all the time in the world to go to South Beach via Metromover and splurge fifty dollars on one drink, but will flip over paying for transit.

The Metromover can be best served by extend it to the Civic Center. I’d rather see the Metrorail extended to Miami Beach all the way to Bal Harbour and it’s possible to propose and construct such a line from Downtown Miami to Bal Harbour via Miami Beach.

You’re better off extending Metrorail, and Tri-Rail were railroads haven’t been pulled, than the cost of making Metromover a proper train.

Metromover needs to have adequate seating capacity, and a much higher average speed to be useful for longer distances

Have fun shopping at BCC tho.

Except for factors such as how every other roadway is under perpetual construction, the very article you’re literally commenting on is describing an ABSURD increase in traffic, the fact that you share the streets with horrible drivers and the sights of stupidly oversized trucks with speed-limiters forming a wall because they have zero idea of the concept of a passing lane. Also using your phone while driving is illegal (handsfree or not), way to expose how much of a reckless imbecile you surely are.

Conclusion: Bruno’s breath has the taste of Joe Carollo sausage. Get out of our city, we have no need for you, and your continued presence is actively making the city worse.

Anonymous

I’ve harbored a strong suspicion that Bruno might actually be Joe Carollo for several months now. What adds to this suspicion is the fact that he has used aliases like Sven and Rabbit, which seems like a significant disservice, as he frequently speaks negatively about his own district while promoting others. If Joe Carollo has a peculiar obsession with the Whitney Houston song “I believe the children are our future,” I would wager it’s him, since both Sven and Bruno have quoted it. Additionally, the backward, indignant responses from this poster are quite unique and make it difficult to believe it’s anyone else. 🤔

Full Disclosure: I’ve never met him or seen him do anything for the City, just basing this off of court pleadings where he was found guilty.

Don’t be so mean sweetheart. Otherwise, what a brilliant post.

It is true that some people feel “trapped”, some people do not. I am grateful for the work that the adults and leaders before me have done. Not a morning goes by where I am not grateful to have lived in Miami this long.

Having a deep compassion for the trapped, entitled, and spoiled babies who constantly whine and complain is one of my many contributions to this great city.

Economic progress is good. If traffic to the airport, seaport, and beaches is heavy, that is great news for producers and workers.

Since diversity of thought is so important, I gladly and dutifully will represent the men of action v the entitled whiners. The producer v the parasite. And the knowledgeable v the merely confident.

We desperately need to upgrade the metromover. It’s the closest thing we have to a subway system and we aren’t taking advantage at all. Like why does it randomly stop on 15th St instead of going to Wynwood??? Why does it go all over Brickell and not have one stop in Little Havana?

Anonymous

Bc Wynwood is outside the core and designed to be a suburb. How about lobbying for those areas with better infrastructure to get the quality retail and restaurants and better public support so we can see them prosper too, and work on extending the metro mover at the same time since that takes awhile.

anon

Yes, 100 years ago that was the plan. Cities grow. Wynwood is not a bustling part of the core that is growing rapidly and attracting headquarters for national companies.

anonymous

When the metromover was built Wynwood was not a place people frequent like they do today. It seems like the city/county is looking to run the line all the way up North Miami Ave and get into Midtown/design district

Anonymous

Maybe because it was intended to serve Greater Downtown Miami, and not everywhere you want it to go because you don’t want to pay fares?

It’s just during rush hour and traveling from the densest part of the city.

Okay…let’s try 5:05pm from 800 Brickell to the Sports Grill South Miami. Google maps says…

40 minutes in a car.
37 minutes by Metrorail.

Admittedly, this includes 11 minutes walking in Brickell, and 13 minutes walking in S. Miami.

You don’t get the full 37 minutes of luxury in the Metrorail, and the excercise is good, but if you value time, driving the vehicle of your choice instead of the Government transportation isn’t so bad.
