$305M Science Museum Will Be Completed By The End Of This Year

Miami’s $305 million Frost Museum of Science will be completed by the end of 2016, according to the Herald.

The aquarium will be stocked with fish beginning in October, with the complex expected to be open to the public in early 2017.

The project had been struggling to pull together funding for completion, but is now fully funded thanks to a combination of loans and cuts:

  • $45 million construction grant from Miami-Dade
  • $40 million bank loan
  • $20 million in cuts to exhibits and features

Looking forward to the Gulf Stream Tank full of sharks at this Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum.

Wish it was a little more futuristic looking for a Science museum but oh well.

Good to hear it will be finished and ready to open in 2017, but so sad to hear they cut $20 million from exhibits and features. I think it will attract more people than PAM at the end.

Agreed, but I’m pretty sure I read that the exterior Planetarium lighting was part of the $20 mil cuts…

(Let’s hope it wasn’t)

“$20 million in cuts to exhibits and features” wow! that is a lot.
I have been to the art museum next door and was very disappointed with their exhibits. In their defense I come from DC and I grew up around the museums of the Smithsonian, so my perception maybe a little skewed.

Yes, I would say a $20 million cut to exhibits and features is catastrophic. I couldn’t imagine the budget for exhibits was much over $20 million to start with. This is how you wind up with a situation like the PAAM. Spend a ton of money on the building and nothing on what is inside it (which in the end is more important). I wish they could find somewhere else to cut $20 million.

PAMM is a fiasco!!! not realy a museum is more like a party and event venue…and most of them not even related to art.

Finished in 2018

So with debt service the taxpayers will be paying $700 million or more for the Frost Science Museum. Plus, the waterfront site is priceless. Taxpayers out $800 Million? Why did the board of the Miami Science Museum sell Philip Frost the naming rights for only $10 Million?

Criminal waste of taxpayer and public money which should have been spent on simple parks and basic transit, far higher priorities than a science museum which most residents will never even visit. And the design sucks too.

The building looks dreadful in such a prominent spot next to the the Herzog & de Meuron building. What a lost opportunity. I cringe every morning I drive by there to work. The patina will make it look like an old 70-ties building after a while.
