Signature Bridge Construction Delay Due To Supply Chain, Holidays, & Weather

A spokesperson for FDOT has explained the reason for the delays to the Signature Bridge construction project.

The completion date is now late 2027. It was originally expected to be completed in Fall 2023.

The FDOT spokesperson told Miami Today that the reason for the delay includes supply chain issues, weather, and holidays.

If the latest deadline holds, it will mean around 9 years of construction in total.

The contract began in October 2018, with a four-year deadline to the contractor for completion and a budget of $802 million. Construction began in early 2019.

Extension of the deadline was permitted under certain circumstances, including weather and major events.

The project includes a rebuild of the intersection at I-95, the 836, and I-395 at the entrance to downtown Miami.

A Signature Bridge with multiple illuminated arches and a separate span of double-deck highway are among the many components of the project.

JOE CAROLLO must resign and return 2 million he used to pay his lawyers. He abused his power and the taxpayers should not be on hook to pay any legal bills and 63 million in penalties!!!

Resign Carollo! Impeach Carollo! He should move to a different state! We need leaders who care about the city and not robbing and harassing Miamians!

Here those supposed to be running things instead focus on lining their pockets (Suarez) or petty, thin-skinned retaliation (Carollo), or stirring up us-against-them & the-world-is-ending crisis (DeSantis). Another example like the bridge: Metromover financial district station escalator is out of service, with steps sitting in a pile … just changed the “expected repair date” on the sign to 12/31/24. Need to get serious people instead of losers running the place.

Anonymous

Suarez and Carollo don’t have authority over the Metromover, which is under jurisdiction of the county. DeSantis wasn’t even in office when the bridge was planned. Nice try.

they are stewards of the city/state and should be on top of making sure things happen, advocating for a functional government at every turn, not making excuses that “it’s not my job” while they take advantage of their positions for their own benefit and not ours

Carollo used 2 million in taxpayer money to pay his lawyers to defend him in a personal lawsuit! Now he’s found guilty and owes 65 million. Is he going to try to use taxpayer money for that too!? He should resign and give the money back to the city. Remember to vote and call for his resignation!

The Empire State Building was built in one year and 45 days during the depression years; And this people are going to take nine years to build this freaking bridge?! Even the Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransisco was built in half the time during the 1930s as well. What a freaking joke!

How many times will it have to be said that the money is NOT local, and NOTHING ELSE could have been built with it. Give it a long rest.

Carlos Gimenez should be sent to jail for wasting all this money, which could have been perfectly used to at least expand the Metrorail to Midtown.
We need to start paying attention to our local elections.

anonymous

People really need to understand how this funding work. The FDOT is the one who gave the county the money to do this under the condition that the money be spent to fix the 836/i95 intersection. The money could NOT be spent on anything other than that. While i dont agree this was the best use of funds it would have been stupid of the county to say no to the money because if they did they would have given the funds to another county instead.

These construction projects are a money grab for contractors. Are you telling me everyone does not sit down and go over the whole project? They don’t discuss holidays, weather delays or unexpected delays? They just tell them to build something they say ok well it will be done in 3 years and the county says ok that sounds great here’s almost 1 billion!

The underdeck, has always been to me most important aspect of this project, I’m sure it will never happen.
Miami Dade should be run by the state.

Wolfgang731

Oh really! So weather and holidays were only recently created, thereby, throwing the whole thing off schedule for an additional four years? Supply chain issues, fine, it’s understandable and beyond their control but to even attempt to suggest that something as established as holidays (which don’t ever change but are rather set into the calendar) and inclement weather (something Florida is more than accustomed to and should, therefore, have been a factor in their initial calculations/estimates) are the reasons for the delay is galling at best and insulting at worst. What a sad excuse for a state agency.

4 more years? This is a joke. Poor planning and leadership. Instead of looking for excuses; they should see how they can expedite the project. Local politicians should put the pressured on them. Every time I pass by the site, most of the workers are talking instead of working. No one is talking about this. I believe there are some reasons for delaying this project that no one is talking about it.
