SkyRise Website Has Been Taken Down, With No Construction Permits Active

The SkyRise Miami website has been taken offline.

Visitors to the site have been greeted with an error message since at least last week.

There’s also no recent activity in construction permitting.

A construction permit that was applied for in early 2020 has been cancelled, city records show.

Although the construction permit was filed for, no plans had been filed by the end of 2020.

The permit is now listed as being cancelled by the city administration.

Two other permits for demolition and sea wall work at the SkyRise site remain in progress, but there hasn’t been any activity on them for years.

SkyRise was approved by the FAA at 1,045 feet above ground and 1,049 feet above sea level, which would have made it Miami’s tallest tower.

Good riddance! Despite the polished rendering, his project was destined to be a cost-engineered, hideous carnival ride that would have permanently scarred the Miami skyline while providing almost no jobs or financial benefit to the city.

Well said Paul.

If built as depicted, it’s already a hideous carnival ride.

It’s way worse in other renderings. They were going to add a Ferris wheel and tower of terror on the side. And I’m always suspicious of renderings with a lot of glass covering ugly metal structures like this. While it looks shiny and blue in the renderings, the ugly tower behind the glass would have likely been far more visible in reality.

agree, it screams pre-fab construction

Anonymous

The pre-fab construction doesn’t matter.. the design of that thing is cartoonish.

Some have said it reminds them of a hairpin but all I see is the giant sombrero at South of the Board on I95.

Uhhh….yeah. It has a patented technique for the prefabrication of an entire restaurant that is built off site and is lifted by the crane in it’s own tower.

Are any of you aware that the foundation is a sliver of land?
Ever walked the site?

There is a tiny sliver of land, so the Skyrise tower (a lot like boom cranes that build skyscrapers is the core) LIFTS the “floors” that are prefabricated offsite and brought to the waterfront on a barge. The building, builds itself on a very small parcel.

It is amazing because it is prefab. It is amazing because there is a 500 person ballroom that is 1,000+ ft above sea level, and just below a nightclub and a restaurant.

To paraphrase the developer, “We have a 55ft Bungee drop that lowers you into a beer garden. We sell you pampers at the top, and Margaritas at the bottom”.

The biggest haters have no idea of the features and benefits of this project.

Anonymous

No one is disliking what Skyrise features, we’re criticizing the “DESIGN’ of it. The design could be much better and if they won’t do it, then I would rather noting at all.

Maybe this project was a tool to extend the lease on the retail property? Those people made out like bandits.

If this is dead, it will be a real shame.

Paul, you were clearly not privy to the same information as many were, and you could not have possibly done the homework that others have.
“while providing almost no jobs or financial benefit to the city” <<< direct quote.

That is absolutely wrong.

The Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau contributed the statistics and analysis that estimated 3.2 Milllion visitors per year. "Almost no" <<<< direct quote.
(Psssssst…..BaySide has 23Million visitors per year.)

Skyrise's planned amenities included
** Skyrise Plunge ( a 55 ft bungee jump attraction)
** Skyrise Drop (the longest and fastest drop ride in the world…dropping 650 ft. at a 95 mph top speed)
** A 4D Flying Theater with exceptional views of Miami, Miami Beach, and S. Florida
** 3 Story INDOOR/OUTDOOR Observation Deck with Food Beverage options.
** Skyrise Sky High Club. A VIP observation club 1,000 ft above the city
** Skyrise Nightclub (enough said)
** Skyrise Restaurant nearly 1,000 ft above sea level
** Skyrise Ballroom – An event space high above the earths surface with column-less spaces to host any number of affairs. Can host 500ppl.
etc. etc. etc.

Paul may be a fantastic guy, may be cranky, but certainly…Paul is uninformed or unaware of what this project was about. Maybe the special interest websites didn't cover it (except I have posted this video below a dozen times), or maybe Paul is new to town and only judges buildings by their render.

If you are uneducated, just invest 10 minutes in this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9B57lGeYmS0

If your opinion is that you don't like it, then cool….that's your opinion man.

If you state ideas AS IF they are facts (for example: "while providing almost no jobs or financial benefit to the city"), then you SHOULD feel like a blithering idiot for posting something like that. It is absolutely wrong.

I always questioned the financial feasibility of this project, but just a few months ago I had heard from a reliable subcontractor that’s been helping out with pricing that the project was very much alive and going through some significant design changes. The website coming down to me means one of two things; either the site is being updated to unveil the new design or the project is officially toast. I’m thinking it’s done for, but small chance it’s alive

If you are keeping score at home, it took about 29 years for the Performing Arts Center to be built, and more than 3 decades for the Miami Port Tunnel to be realized.

You should see the proforma. Or look carefully at the renderings and notice all the retail/attraction opportunities.

For all the Mensa posters crying for a Metromover to take them to South Beach for a $16 Martini, wouldn’t it be better to take the EXISTING Metromover to Bayside and buy a $16 Martini in the bar lounge 1,000 ft above Miami?

Anonymous

Bayside is disgusting, poor maintenance, the food court is disgusting and hardly the tables are cleaned. the restaurants are offering bad service and the whole place stinks 😷 ….. instead of building this monstrosity, would be much better to improve this Mall that is a tourist attraction right on the waterfront
Right now looks like a market place in Afghanistan 🤓

Can’t be any worse than that pathetic little ferris wheel? Talk about lack of innovation. If you’re going to do something that’s been done a million times all over the world, at least do it spectacularly. That ferris wheel is an embarrassment to the skyline and nothing about it says Miami

Anonymous

No, of course not. Skyrise is an exceptional Attraction, Observation Tower, engineering wonder, job creator, and tourist dollar magnet.

The average (and below average people) do not know how to differentiate from facts and opinions.
Those mouth breathers conflate “I don’t like” with “bad design” and they have no idea what makes the design amazing.

Ha!.. this person first writes; “Skyrise is an exceptional Attraction, Observation Tower, engineering wonder, job creator, and tourist dollar magnet.”

Then this person writes; “The average (and below average people) do not know how to differentiate from facts and opinions.”

This person is so confused about what he wrote.

Here’s a little tip for you; Skyrise was never built, so there’s no way to know if it would’ve ever been “an exceptional Attraction” or the “job creator and tourist dollar magnet” that YOU think it would have become.

Funny, because when visitors of mine come to Miami I always take them to Bayside to see the hundreds of real Miamians. That area is filled with locals on the weekends. There may be some tourists there but its majority Miami. Now, south Miami Beach is majority tourists.

What a shame. This would’ve been the game changer that downtown Miami needs. A restaurant and a ballroom in the sky. I could care less about the kiddie rides. But even the design was iconic. It’s a shame that this cool and different structure wasn’t designed iconic and great for bayside this would’ve been. I hope they do something great there.
