Spirit Announces Plans To Become MIA’s Second Biggest Airline With 30 Destinations

Spirit Airlines will begin service to Miami for the first time ever – in a big way.

The low cost carrier announced plans to serve 30 cities from Miami beginning in October.

The airline says it will become the second largest at MIA by this fall. It is the biggest launch of any airline in the history of the airport.

Spirit will fly to the following cities from MIA:

  • Atlantic City (begins Oct. 6)
  • Atlanta (begins Oct. 6)
  • Baltimore (begins Oct. 6)
  • Bogota (begins Oct. 6)
  • Guatemala City (begins Oct. 6)
  • Medellin (begins Oct. 6)
  • Newark (begins Oct. 6)
  • Port-au-Prince (begins Oct. 6)
  • Santo Domingo (begins Oct. 6)
  • San Salvador (begins Oct. 7)
  • Barranquilla (begins Nov. 17)
  • Boston (begins Nov. 17)
  • Cali (begins Nov. 17)
  • Chicago O’Hare (begins Nov. 17)
  • Cleveland (begins Nov. 17)
  • Dallas-Fort Worth (begins Nov. 17)
  • Denver (begins Nov. 17)
  • Detroit (begins Nov. 17)
  • Hartford-Bradley (begins Nov. 17)
  • Houston Intercontinental (begins Nov. 17)
  • Las Vegas (begins Nov. 17)
  • Myrtle Beach (begins Nov. 17)
  • New York LaGuardia (begins Nov. 17)
  • Orlando (begins Nov. 17)
  • Philadelphia (begins Nov. 17)
  • Raleigh-Durham (begins Nov. 17)
  • San Pedro Sula (begins Nov. 17)
  • San José, Costa Rica (begins Nov. 17)
  • San Juan (begins Nov. 17)
  • St. Thomas (begins Nov. 17)

All flights will be daily, except Guatemala City (4x weekly), San Salvador (3x weekly), LaGuardia  (2x daily), San José (4x weekly), and St. Thomas (3x weekly).

Tickets will go on sale once the routes are approved by authorities.

Spirit told The Points Guy that it has no plans to downsize at Fort Lauderdale, and that the new flights will complement existing service there. The airline has 100 flights per day scheduled at FLL this July.

Miami will instantly become one of the top ten busiest airport for Spirit with the new flights.

MIA has switched to a preferential gate model during the pandemic, allowing low cost carriers to enter the airport.

New entrants at MIA over the past year include Jetblue and Southwest, while Frontier has also launched a major expansion.

Here come more low-class South Beach tourists.

I think this expansion makes a lot of sense when you factor in many of the larger cruise ships are moving from Fort Lauderdale to Miami with the opening of all the new terminals.

Spirit’s start at the airport will coincide with the resumption of cruising. I expect Southwest, Jetblue, and Frontier will all be able to expand to meet increased demand from cruises.

you hit it. 3000+ passengers on a cruise ship and 200 on a plane. Lot of demand once cruising re-starts

This is bad news for all of south fla. More cheap flights means more low class pple coming in droves.

Did you mean low class or low income? Have you not witness the type of the class accompanying many rich folks? I can’t believe people like you are still fooled. A certain type of slave you are I am sure. No telling what a rich dude can get you to do.

This is great. More competition for AA on certain routes where they used to have none. These routes were very overpriced because of this. Also, this hopefully means that the crazies who have been causing issues on AA flights will switch over to Spirit now

Really? Why does it have to be Spirit? Why couldn’t our 2nd biggest airline be JetBlue, SW, United, or literally anyone else.

Keep an eye on the local news in case Spirit in MIA will be anything like Spirit in FLL. At least once every couple of months, you can expect a video of passengers beating the hell out of each other or the airline agents.

What’s your big contribution to society?

Anonymous

One of my contributions is not beating the hell out of fellow passengers or airline agents.. even though some of them deserve it.

the only good news it that we will have price competition for American and less twerking/assaults on AA flights to LGA…otherwise a very poor decision by MIA with bad consequences for the image of Miami as a cheap getaway for years to come.

Excellent, more competition on routes between MIA and Colombia is highly needed.

yeah right, those spirit flyers only go to places with free cover packing a flask so that they don’t have to buy drinks, pulling a dine and dash on restaurants in a city that they can’t afford to live in, and packing their whole crew of 8 into a one bedroom cheap ass illegal airbnb on the outskirts… GHETTOOOOO!

Notice how no one on here express worry about the cheap tickets bringing low income folks from South America? Preoccupied with the Midwest of America though. They say riff raff but really mean poor. The reason is they know even the poor ones in ‘Latin America’ won’t be able to board the flight. That is the type of separation they would love to see everywhere, where they keep certain folks who they consider unworthy, and to be their dirty laundry, out of sight so they can PRETEND that their countries are sooo full cosmopolitans! What a joke. You know, the way most Cubans here like to pretend to keep their non-Madrid looking folks hidden so they can pretend that Cuba and Cubans are mainly of the Madrid extraction. So wonderful living a life of pretense uh?

The worst from South America coming here would be those Brazilian criminals and the Argentinian Che Boludos, freaking idiots all of them

well he does have a point as far as the crime in Brazil and a lot of South America where you can’t even travel down there without some dude in a motorcycle helmet pulling a gun on you to rob your wallet. The Argentinians though have some good bakeries in North Beach and are usually pretty decent people but their accent has to be the most annoying Spanish one ever lol

Wow

If it was up to y’all, Miami would be a boring wasteland everyone would avoid. Get your head out your ass

It would be great if a certain “class” of people avoided Miami

Anonymous

lol… I’ve heard it said that back in the day it was cocaine that built Miami. And today you’re belittling a “certain class” of people and wish they would avoid Miami?

When did Miami get all these arrogant and snobbish people?

(and all these chickens and roosters running around in the streets)
