Starchitect’s Firm Could Design Downtown Miami’s Metrocenter

The name of the architecture firms involved in bidding for Downtown Miami’s Metrocenter project have been revealed, according to the SFBJ.

Metrocenter could also have 5,000 residential units, one of the bidders said.

Three bidding teams have emerged for the development, each comprised of multiple major developers.

According to the report, the architects now revealed as being associated with the bidders include:

  • Foster + Partners – the architect for a partnership between Florida Value Partners, Cornerstone Group, and John Buck Company. The partnership is known as Met District Partners LLC
  • Arquitectonica – the architect for a partnership between Related Urban, 13th Floor Investments, and Merrimac Ventures known as RUDG LLC
  • Corwil – the architect for a partnership between Terra, Atlantic Pacific Companies, and Sterling Bay. The partnership is known as MetVision Partners LLC

The RUDG partnership is the one that said they could build up to 5,000 residential units, with 2,000 of those being workforce or affordable housing units.

RUDG also wants to build two office buildings and retail.

Miami-Dade has set a minimum of 2,000 units of affordable and workforce housing.

In addition, the county wants a new transit terminal, main library, HistoryMiami Museum, and a K-12 school and day care center.

Up to 23.7 million square foot could be developed on the Metrocenter properties, the county has said.

Foster + Partners please!

I suppose it’s better than Arquitectonica or Corwill, but they did design that twin-tower proposal prior to Citadel on the Villa Magna site, which was just two boring boxes with hideous random facades.

No more arquitectonica please !!!

I would also say that Arquitectonica’s not in the Starchitect category (as it is a HUGE stretch).
They are the Target to a Saks Fifth Avenue comparison.

Without a doubt….none of the architects involved here would EVER embrace the title “Starchitect”.

Arquitectonica might be pleased with all of their American Institute of Architects awards for the buildings they have drawn. Bernardo may be proud of the Lifetime Achievement Awards he’s received, Laurinda Spear would certainly be proud of ARQs leadership in New Urbanism and leading the way to revolutionize the way people think about community design, and their children are really carrying the baton.

Well if ARQ gets it we already know exactly what it will look like.

Guess who’s going to win the bid (if they haven’t already).

The Bronx Museum of Arts is a terrific project….
Is that “exactly what we are going to get”?

Or will it be more like Festival Walk in Hong Kong…
Is that “exactly what we are going to get”?

Will the residential component be like Infinity in San Francisco….
Is that “exactly what we are going to get”?

Multiple boxes with random jailhouse windows on giant parking podiums with banana-taped-to-wall tier art.

Get real

Those are some great examples of ARQ’s work in other cities – too bad they don’t do that here

Arquitectonica does great work, here, there and everywhere. To say that you “know exactly what it will look like” is not true.

The Federal Courthouse in Downtown Miami is very nice.
Brickell CitiCenter is great.
Regalia in Sunny Isles looks very good to me.
Atlantis is timeless and dare I say, Iconic.

Look at their body of work in Asia, the Middle East, and the USA, and there are some incredible and dynamic designs. I wish that they were the architect that the Terra group chose.

ARQs Microsoft European Headquarters building in Paris France is another great example of their office building prowess.

It is great to have a local architectural firm doing such great things in New York, San Francisco, Boston, Lima, Buenos Aires, Paris, Hong Kong, Dubai, London, Milan, Luxembourg City, Singapore, Manilla, Shanghai, Abu Dhabi, Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur, and Xiamen, China.

The Fort-Brescia family are local treasures.

It is a shame that there are so many people in Miami who do not have a clue about their body of work or importance.

What??? ^^^No examples of their genius in Miami? Could that be why people in Miami ‘don’t have a clue about their body of work” despite their being headquartered here?

Robin

There are plenty of great examples of ARQs work in Miami. Clubber listed a bunch.

SOME people don’t have a clue. I have a clue.

The best developers in Miami have a clue. Swire, Related, GenCom, the GSA, Allen Morris, Terra, Virgin, MCS, and plenty of municipalities know.

Why don’t the average and below average people have a clue? I don’t know….maybe everything that they know, they learned from the comments section of a Blog and have never built, bought, or developed any real estate.

The upside down pyramid design and other architectural marvels, never seen before here or anywhere in world, would be perfect for this prime no. 1 center, focal point in Miami.

I envision the area featuring Modern Moorish Mediterranean (MMM) arches, transcending upward into glassy marvels, honoring the historical Mediterranean roots of Miami’s West side while introducing timeless, futuristic elegance to its East side.

A public spiritual square, open to all faiths, would inspire unity and universal purpose—where rhythmic hymns or bells chime on the hour, spreading peace and prosperity throughout the heart of the city.

This vision blends Miami’s character, blending both the historical and modern aspects on either side of Interstate 95.

Foster & Partners, please.

I’d root for Foster, but they designed that Citadel tower that I was so excited about and came up soooo bland. Maybe not their fault. Maybe that’s what Kenny wanted. But in any case. May the best win.

Anonymous

Well I’d rather have something more Citadel than The Towers by Foster + Partners.

The conversation probably went like this:

KG: This is the Citadel World HQ’s. A solid financial institution that must instill a
sense of safety, strength and permanence.

SNF: So, a 1,000+ ft tall citadel?

KG; Exactly!

SNF: Done.

Oh please Foster and Partners are a red herring.
They will do the “masterplan” and nice renderings and then if the company actually wins it, they will just have a bunch of so so architects do the actual buildings under Foster and Partners “master plan”
I wish I was wrong, but I know I’m not. Sigh….

I’m excited about Miami’s future “Innovation District,” planned for the area west of Park West, near Overtown, where a 24-acre hub for technology and business will soon take shape. I can’t wait to see the wave of startups it will inspire, especially as it connects to the financial district south of the river. The emerging “Startup Square” in Brickell, centered around 2nd Avenue, is another thrilling development in the works. Rooftops are becoming the new garages, symbolizing a shift in startup culture to modern, urban green spaces that fuel innovation.

Thank you Chat GPT! That article seems to have been written in 2012. Now that nothing has happened in 12 years, can you rewrite this to acknowledge that the Developer of the so-called Innovation District is focusing on E11even condos on that property?

If it was abandoned 12 years ago, as you suggest (which seems improbable) – and it’s still alive our collective spirit, it it most likely will continue forward now in an even more impressive way than was fathomable before – by a developer with the will and the way, probably the one that wins this bid 🏗️ 🌟

All great until you find out that Miami has next to zero metro rail. What happened to Biden’s money printed infrastructure bill? We actually need a tricounty metro region public metro system. From Palm Beach County down and I mean into the western parts of the counties, not just the coastal. And we need wast-west links. Miami will be a disaster of gridlock aoon…A proper metro system will cost likely $5 to 10 billion for tricounty

hopefully Arquitectonica doesn’t win. plus every RelatedUrban project that i’ve seen has looked horrendous.

Anonymous

That is why it is the lower status Related “Urban”. More socially conscience housing for a given income. IMO, Arq and Related Urban go perfectly together. Mediocrity A – Z.
