Tourism Chief: Japan Airlines To Miami Within A Year

Within a year, Miami will have a nonstop flight to Tokyo on Japan Airlines, Miami’s tourism chief is promising.

Greater Miami Convention and Visitors’ Bureau CEO Bill Talbert made the announcement yesterday at the annual State of the Tourism Industry event, according to the Herald.

Talbert said he was confident the flight would be announced soon. At this time next year, the inaugural flight will have already taken place, he added.

County and tourism leaders have met with JAL about the flight several times this year.

As a member of one world and partner to American Airlines this will be a very successful route…

I have mixed feelings about long flights such as this one. On the one hand I personally hate layovers and I will do whatever I can to avoid them, so this trip to Tokyo sounds awesome, but on the other hand my wife’s aunt had a vein thrombosis after a flight from New York to Taipei and passed away a day after landing. She was in her early 40’s and super fit. All things considered I think I will take my layovers when traveling far away.

My condolences to your wife’s aunt. That had to been a terrible experience. I remember years ago when Dan Quayle was still Vice President, he had issues with something similar, and he flew VIP aircraft at that time. He was also very fit. I have to say, I absolutely hate layovers, it just seems you greatly increase your chances of your luggage not making it, parts of you luggage not making it, or you not making it (computers going down, labor strike, weather, etc). It is a long time in the air, but I hope the entertainment is decent 🙂

And Brightline within weeks.

I like ANA better, but still good for us and Japan. There’s absolutely no reason why one of America’s most important international airports doesn’t have flights to a country as important as Japan.

Or anywhere in Asia

HND, NRT and KIX have a lot of connecting flights to mainland Asia, so any in Japan would be the most efficient routes. Also, they’re some of the best airports in the world. Seriously, changing at China or Russia makes CDG in France seem like a cakewalk.

Are they going to use their B787-9 aircraft on this route?

I surprised Singapore Airlines hasn’t exercised 5th Freedom Rights and started this route already. Hopefully they will follow Japan Airlines.

We could use a few more non-stops to Cali on more than just American Air.

United flies MIA-SFO and Delta flies MIA-LAX; not to mention jetBlue, Spirit, United and Alaska offers multiple California routes from FLL.

I feel only USL had LAX MIA.

Although exciting and a definite boom for Miami, I’m sure it will be more than a year. I want to wait for the announcement before I start blowing my horns.
