Tri-Rail’s First Ever Train To Downtown Miami Approved For Next Week

Tri-Rail has finally obtained approval to test a trainset running into MiamiCentral, according to WLRN’s Danny Rivero.

The authorization for testing lasts from June 19 through June 23, a letter from track owner Florida East Coast Railway shows.

Additional test dates may be considered based on the results, the letter states.

Meanwhile, the actual launch of Tri-Rail’s revenue service to downtown Miami may be delayed again, according to Miami Today.

David Dech, the executive director of the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority which operates Tri-Rail, said he was now looking at late 2023 or early 2024 for the start of service, while citing progress on getting it moving.

An agreement has been signed allowing 26 daily Tri-Rail trains on FEC tracks into downtown Miami, Dech said.

And Miami continues to be a joke. Traffic negatively affects any areas economy. If the south Florida region doesn’t get its act together we are going to see the consequences

Many areas of Miami Metro now have the density where mass transit really makes sense. SE Florida is densely populated, one of the most dense in the USA… cars are horrible in cities and we should not be dependent on them

So…this has been the mantra since the 1970’s.
Traffic negatively affects the economy. I don’t like the traffic, therefore WE NEED more ______________.

Read the Miami Herald articles from that time. The Miami Herald is as wrong 53 years ago, as you are today.

You would read something like the following: “Miami’s Traffic Problems: A Growing Crisis” by Robert B. Cohn, published in The Miami Herald on February 14, 1970.

“Miami’s traffic problems are growing into a major crisis. The city is bursting at the seams with cars, and the roads are simply not adequate to handle the volume of traffic. The result is gridlock, delays, and frustration for motorists.”

Major crisises are things like World Wars, Global Pandemics, droughts, plagues, Popeye’s running out of Chicken Sandwiches…..things like that.

The economy is as robust as it has ever been. Yes, there is more traffic than in downtown Detroit, but not more than Mexico City, Paris, or New York.

And all of them have subways to handle the population. Otherwise, it would be gridlock and companies would be looking elsewhere to set up shop.

Tri-Rail should let a few of us commentators from The Next Miami hop on the first test run! At times it seems like we care more about Miami’s public transit than some city officials do! Who’s with me? #BringTriRailToSouthBeach

A few of the commentators on The Next Miami have been invited for the first runs.
Obviously, commenting on The Next Miami isn’t the most significant of their community involvement and does not show up on their resumes.

I got invited to drive the train. And you, Bruno?

I was over at Miami Central coming from port of Miami this Morning and saw a lot of train riders getting off at the station. it’s all a good sign for downtown and adjacent areas in my opinion, little did I know SB I-95 was completely shut down between 79th and 62nd because of a deadly 8 car crash. Tri-Rail will only complement Brightline since the latter is a bit pricey than Tri-Rail.

David Dech the South Florida rail executive said they’ve had productive meetings with the Florida Dispatch company who currently handles Brightline and will start to dispatch Tri-Rail trains as well. Tri-rail is staffed up with enough engineers and conductors for the Miami Central service. With basic testing late June, it’s seems to me they should be able to start simulated schedule testing in July to get FRA approval so revenue service should start late Sept early Oct. What is the hold up?

You watch somebody illegally crossing the tracks or ignoring the signals gets hit and another slew of studies mandated by the Feds delays it another five years.

Good to start in December/new year for ridership boost

I’m confused as to why this is taking so long. If they are going to have test trains starting mid to late June then why will it be late 2023 or early 2024 before real service starts?

And why do we need Briteline? Well, it’s an attractive option for suicide so there’s that

Glad to see more rail transit. Environmentally better than wider interstates for idling cars .

What should we do to get the government making this happen sooner? Is there anything we could do? Call the mayors? Send letters to the congresspeople or senators? Create a campaign in facebook? Any one with good ideas, other than giving up hope and waiting another 20 years……

Makes it easier for commuters on tri rail to get downtown, removes the metrorail transfer riders have to do currently

To offer an effective form of transit for a major metro area, that doesn’t involve expanding a thirty-mile-an-hour people mover with limited capacity and intended for airports and concentrated urban locations.
